Negative experience: Neat selection but prices are insulting. Huge markup on everything. Save yourself 30%+ and stick with eBay.

Anthony Davidson Posted on Google 2 months ago

Fantastic experience: A ton of games. Wish we could have bought more!

Les Os Posted on Google 2 months ago

Negative experience: I used to go to J&L frequently when it was in Chinatown, they’ve always had an impressive collection. I stop by every now and again to browse, but it should be viewed as more of a museum than actual store. Prices are roughly 2-4x what you can find on sites like eBay. Most of their retro items are sun-bleached since they’ve likely been sitting on shelves for years without selling. Only makes sense to buy here if you are wealthy enough where the convenience of having the item immediately is enough to ignore the insane premium (likely due to the midtown location).

Local Guide Posted on Google 3 months ago

Negative experience: Inconsistent. These people told me on the phone they would buy an item, just for them to tell me it’s “worthless” once I arrive.

Fantastic experience: Long-time Pro Rewards member here, and this was my first time making a purchase at this location. I came in with a challenging request: trading in my Switch OLED, along with several games and accessories, and transferring years’ worth of data to a new Switch 2. The manager, Jonathan, completely exceeded my expectations. His knowledge, efficiency, professionalism, and demeanor were outstanding. Another associate mentioned that the process would take quite a while, but Jonathan handled the multi-step transaction with ease and completed it in record time. He smoothly applied my trade-ins and discounts, clearly explained all of my options, and made the entire experience stress-free. Most importantly, he engaged in genuine conversation and treated me like a person, not just another transaction. When I got home, setting up my new Switch 2 was effortless. I simply connected to Wi-Fi, plugged it in, and everything was ready to go. Jonathan truly set me up for success. Based on this experience, I am confident this will become my go-to store in NYC. I hope to work with Jonathan again whenever possible.

Negative experience: Too pricey sadly, shame as the selection is huge

Nicolás Navarrete Posted on Google 3 months ago

Negative experience: This place is kinda weird; they have a huge selection, especially for PlayStation and Xbox games and consoles. But their prices for those things are super high. If you're looking to buy games, this isn't the best spot. Trust me, there are plenty of places with similar stuff and way better prices. It seems like it might be better for console or electronics repairs, even though I still think their repair costs are a bit much. For example, they quoted me $100 to fix my PS Vita 2000's R button, and the salesperson tried to convince me there were other problems, which wasn't true.

Jr Prashad Posted on Google 4 months ago

Negative experience: Do not, I repeat do not go here. Took my playstation 3 here twice, one to get the disc tray fixed and my fan replaced. they did do those changes but my PlayStation 3 kept overheating badly. so i took my ps3 to a place called Gamers Edge in valley stream and they changed the thermal paste and something else. They also found that the screws on my mother board weren’t placed back properly and were all in the wrong place and one of the circuit boards weren’t screwed in properly as well so it was over heating even more. that was all because of J&L Game for not replacing them properly so do not go here. Gamers Edge is better and i only paid 80 dollars for this fix

Nicolette Dominguez Posted on Google 4 months ago

Negative experience: Pricing determined at random, customer service in the gutter, repair services are ridiculously slow, attitude if you dare to ask even a single question. Tourist trap, avoid at all costs. The staff here make the gaming industry look miserable. They only smile while making fun of their customers, its a miracle they can make rent.

Richard Bien-Aime (RBAphoto) Posted on Google 4 months ago

Negative experience: Everything is insanely overpriced and the employees are awful. No customer service whatsoever..

Dylan Permuy Posted on Google 4 months ago

Negative experience: Unfriendly staff during a slow hour. Paid 4x over pricecharting for one jp n64 game. Lots of inventory though.

William Vogan Posted on Google 5 months ago

Fantastic experience: I took my damaged Pokemon Crystal GBA game for repair and they were amazing. Everyone was kind and informative, and my game was fixed within a week. The technician said it took several different tries to get it working again, and they figured it out. 10/10 experience and I’ll be coming back for more repairs and new games in the future.

Sanghyoun Lee Posted on Google 5 months ago

Negative experience: I called them to ask how much the PS5 Edge controller stick module costs, and they said they’re selling it for $40. I told them the prices I found were around $19.99, maybe $23 at most, and their response was even more ridiculous—they basically told me to go buy it there instead. I’m sure they’re overcharging for other products too. Don’t go there!

Bit Binary0101 Posted on Google 5 months ago

Fantastic experience: Best gaming store i ever visited i even grew up buying games in this store before they moved in this location.they even offer to get very rare games you can't find anywhere for you at a fair price every physical games i have purchased from PS1 - PS3 NDS 3DS etc is from these guys

J. Poke Posted on Google 6 months ago

Negative experience: Everything is insanely overpriced. Seems like a scam for tourists. The selection was great though but definitely shop anywhere else for a better deal. I thought retro stores were where you find deals!

Thomas Spychalsky Posted on Google 6 months ago

Negative experience: One Star — Overpriced, Unwelcoming, and Uninformed I’ve given J&L Games three chances, and each visit has been more disappointing than the last. My most recent experience sealed the deal: I won’t be returning. Let’s start with pricing. Their games are consistently marked up far beyond what you’d pay anywhere else—including eBay, even with shipping. While they do carry a wide selection across multiple consoles, most of the titles are common and can be found in the bargain bin at GameStop for a fraction of the cost. The real issue, though, is the staff. Every interaction I’ve had has been met with hostility or indifference. On my last visit, I was greeted with a grunt and a curt “What do you want?” When I asked about games for a specific console, the response was a snide “Right in front of you—the entire wall.” I tried to engage with the only other employee, who seemed equally uninterested and unfamiliar with basic items I was purchasing. After reluctantly buying two common accessories, I browsed the shelves again and found a sequel to a game I was looking for. I asked if they had the original, and was told, “If it’s not next to the sequel, then no,” in the same dismissive tone. When I asked to see the sequel, it was slammed onto the counter. The price? $99.99—for a game that’s nowhere near rare or collectible. I walked out, and heard the employee angrily slam it back onto the shelf behind me. Bottom line: this store is a headache. It’s run by people who seem to lack both customer service skills and basic gaming knowledge. Unless you enjoy being overcharged and talked down to, steer clear.

Thiago Melo Posted on Google 7 months ago

Negative experience: I was served by a completely rude salesperson who didn't even want to check if they had a game in stock. And the price is terrible too. Deplorable experience!

Rafi Hossain Posted on Google 7 months ago

Positive experience: If you need any games brand new releases or previous generation, J&L will have you covered easily! The unfortunate side of J&L is that there are items which costs 30-50% more than what you will find at Gamestop, Best Buy or PC Richard&Son. I saw the dualsense edge controller being sold for $220 +tax, the PS5 HD Camera which is originally $59.99 being sold for $119.99. I'm not sure why J&L puts these prices when someone can easily buy those same items at Best Buy for 50% cheaper. Other than that, J&L will always make sure you're covered for any upcoming games which will release. I also got Black Ops II for $20 which is a great price for the game in 2025.

Fantastic experience: Very unique video game store with retro video games, and video games you’ll see in stock today for the Nintendo switch, ps4, ps5 and others.

Liliana Faye Posted on Google 8 months ago

Negative experience: Everything is overpriced from its market price also gives hardly any money or store credit for games they’ll probably put on the shelf for 5x what you give them

Hood Verse Gaming Posted on Google 8 months ago

Fantastic experience: Great experience! Friendly staff, quality products, and smooth service. Definitely one of the better spots around.

Oliver Hernandez Posted on Google 8 months ago

Positive experience: Man I love going to this place this place here has like one of the best video games they sell every game for any game system from Nintendo 64 Sega and the workers are kinda nice but one thing is that yeah some of theyre games are pretty expensive but it explains it if it's a game that is hard to find and also gotta point out that some of the workers have always like an attitude

Matt Dodd Posted on Google 8 months ago

Negative experience: Insanely good collection, friendly staff and all games in very good condition... shame everything is about 1.5x more expensive than anywhere else.

Kendell Grant Jr Posted on Google 9 months ago

Negative experience: I would never step foot back inside this place again. The amount of disrespect I received when trying to have a clear conversation about business was not just. Highly recommend spending your money elsewhere or even selling any items elsewhere!!!!!

FERNANDO GONZALEZ Posted on Google 9 months ago

Positive experience: Nice selection of games but most prices are way over the market price and honestly that kinda throws you off since they aren't that fair in that regard, other than that very nice staff.

namer nolem Posted on Google 9 months ago

Fantastic experience: J&L Game has anything you want for your retro gaming needs, their stock is updated online ensuring you know what to expect, staff are very straightforward and easy to work with as well.

Christian Amarilla Posted on Google 9 months ago

Negative experience: Great variety of stuff but prices are egregiously high. No way should 6-7 year old nba 2K games be this expensive

Mar Q. Etpläc Posted on Google 10 months ago

Negative experience: They want $89.99 for an OPEN ness amiibo that costs $17.99 and is currently being sold at GAMESTOP. Pre TL;DR Everything costs at least 3x the maximum reasonable price. The reason they have so many amiibo is because they aren’t SELLING any Everything else is similarly priced with 200+% markups. That said, they have a bunch of cool stuff, if you’re a millionaire

chvse Posted on Google 10 months ago

Negative experience: By far the worst game store I have been to. There is a huge selection of what you are looking for, if you want to pay 2-3 times more than market value. The staff aren't friendly and prices are locked, no negotiating. I have been to this store several times within the past 5 years and see the same stuff sit and never sell, I am genuinely confused how they even make money other than uneducated people that happen to wonder in because they were near Bryant Park. The place has terrible lighting, a bad smell, is dirty, and staff that won't even bother to acknowledge your existence. Worst part about their games is they sell games at unreasonable costs and put their own custom stickers on the disc........

Destiny O Posted on Google 10 months ago

Negative experience: I went to the store yesterday and bought a game. BEFORE I purchased it, I asked if I were to use the code (for PS3) they would work and they guaranteed me that it will work 100% on the spot. Once I arrived home the codes expired since 2013. I called immediately and didn’t use them. They told me to come to the store the next day and I did. I wanted a refund and they refused! I asked “so you gave me a game with false information of your product?” They said yes and still refused to help me not even a partial refund. I am filing a lawsuit and for those who also got scammed, please contact me so I can build this case up more. Insta: dreamland_evles_and_farries

Positive experience: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Google Review – J & L Game (NYC) I like this place a lot—and I’ve bought a bunch of things here myself. J & L Game has an enormous selection of games across multiple generations of consoles, from retro classics to newer releases. The variety is honestly impressive, and their store presentation is immaculate. It’s well-organized, clean, and feels like a true haven for game collectors and enthusiasts. And don’t get it twisted—they’re not selling you junk. Everything I’ve bought has worked and been in excellent condition, even if some items come with a J & L-branded sticker seal or are refurbished. For the most part, you’re getting something clean, functional, and preserved with care. That said, the pricing can be steep—especially for sought-after or retro titles. For example, I saw the Nintendo Switch 2 priced at $800, and older games like Mega Man on GBA going for nearly $1000. I get it—they’re in Manhattan, rent is high, and they have to make a profit. But some of the prices feel more like display pieces than things meant to actually sell. If you’re just browsing or hunting for regular releases, you’ll find good stuff at fair prices. But if you’re chasing rare, nostalgic titles, just know you’re going to pay a premium. Overall, it’s a great store run by good people, and I’m glad it’s still standing in NYC. Just go in with your eyes open—and maybe your wallet a little heavier if you’re after the vintage gems.

Positive experience: The selection of games and consoles is good, but the prices are much higher compared to other video game stores.

Frank Alba Alba Posted on Google 10 months ago

Fantastic experience: Miss there Elizabeth st Location but So glad they are still in Business " Amazing selection of games and Toys

Kendrick Casareo Posted on Google 10 months ago

Negative experience: J&L has a huge selection of games however that doesn’t entirely mean this is a good thing. The front of the store carries most Nintendo games with the Switch and DS / 3DS games out on display while the back carries playstation and other console games. This store is NOT for the faint of heart due to the 3x to 5x increase in pricing. Last time I checked, a loose cartridge of Pokemon Black cost as much or more than 3 fully priced games at launch. You could buy Breath of the Wild for you and 2 other friends for a single copy of Pokemon Black! As others have said, they overprice their Amiibos. An amiibo that goes for $20 at GameStop you can find at J&L for $100. I would recommend this place for anyone who wants to window shop or as a place to cool down during the summer’s hot weather.

Fantastic experience: If you're a video game enthusiast in New York City, J&L Game is an absolute must-visit, even if you're just looking to browse. While the prices might lean a bit higher than what you'd find on the secondary market or at other shops, the experience itself is a true gem. What truly sets J&L Game apart is its impeccable organization and presentation. Walking in feels less like entering a cluttered game store and more like stepping into a meticulously curated museum of gaming history. Every shelf is thoughtfully arranged, with games neatly displayed and clearly labeled. You won't find yourself rummaging through dusty bins or struggling to identify titles – everything is visible at a glance. Each game, whether it's a retro classic or a modern release, is often immaculately packaged, many even sealed in protective plastic to preserve their condition. This attention to detail extends to how information is presented; prices are clearly marked, and often, you can easily see what a game includes, be it special editions, manuals, or extra content. This level of transparency and care is a rare sight in the world of game retail, and it truly enhances the shopping experience. While the prices at J&L Game can be a touch higher than current market value, the value isn't just in the game itself, but in the peace of mind that comes with knowing you're purchasing from a store that prioritizes quality and authenticity. Moreover, their extensive inventory, spanning decades of gaming, means you stand a real chance of unearthing that elusive title you've been chasing for your collection. Whether it's a rare import, a complete-in-box classic, or a forgotten gem, J&L Game often has it. So, if you're in New York City and have an appreciation for a beautifully organized and comprehensive video game collection, make your way to J&L Game. You might just walk out with a valuable addition to your own stash, or at the very least, you'll have enjoyed a truly impressive visual feast of gaming history.

Negative experience: Taking advantage of the full Switch 2 hype 800 to 850 for it that is ridiculous I hope the scalpers understand its not a Covid Era and more are being made but yeah no they tried it with me Absolutely disgusting.

Casper C. Posted on Google 11 months ago

Negative experience: Everything is 2x-3x the price it should be. Make sure you crosscheck eBay at the very least before purchasing anything. Import and shipping fees do not justify these prices at all.

Yousef Sul Posted on Google 11 months ago

Negative experience: I bought 3 Wii cd and I don’t live in nyc and my console is back at my home country I asked the man that works there “ARE U SURE THEY WORK” he said yes they do and I go back home reminder it’s a 12 HOUR FLIGHT and all the discs don’t work.. I got scammed for 180$ don’t go there I will be suing them for sure

J & L Game

Hi Yousef,

We apologize for the misunderstanding. When you asked if they work, the answer is "Yes", because all pre-owned games are tested before sale. If you did not specify that you live in another country or that your console was not purchased in North America, then we may have assumed you had a North American console to play them on. If you would like, please send us an e-mail and we will try to resolve this situation.

Regards,
J&L Team

Sarah Sterling Posted on Google 11 months ago

Negative experience: If I could give them 0 stars I would. As a retro game collector this is unacceptable. I opened my game and it had a J&L games sticker on the physical disc. Don’t even get me started about their ridiculous prices ($50-$100 more per game than they are worth). If you want to get ripped off feel free to go here.

Yeedwig Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: I asked the worker if he had a game, and I what I got was a big sigh as if it wasn't his job to check if they've got any. There was only one job to do.. Typing some letters on the computer, but he gave me an irritated look as if it was my fault to buy games there. Will never go again.

Chrystal Tomala Posted on Google 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Husband loves this place. Have so many retro games as well as systems. Good prices.

Alec Ludwig Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Worst game store ive ever seen, spend ur hard earned money elsewhere. Absurd prices, charges double for most of their retro games, all the gamecube games were a 100% markup. Most disgusting greedy money grubbing pricing ive ever seen.

Maria Fernanda Frederick Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Large large large and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced inventory. They have a big inventory because obviously who is going to buy it a that prices?. Don’t waste your time, save money and time buying on eBay better, I would recommend GameStop over this place. Avoid this place at all costs.

Far V Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Store has a great selection but prices don’t make sense. I have tried selling ps2 games here and get offered nothing more than $5 for games they’re selling for $80 and up. I’m not asking for $80 but jeez man , if it’s an $80 game according to you , why do you lowball as hard as you can every single time ? They sell a pre-owned ps2 for $180 with no game included , I brought mine in in great working condition , loads of games (some being $50 games on their own) , 2 controls , memory stick , hdmi cable , and I got offered $80. The guy then pretends like he’s bending over backwards to go up $10 to $90. Again we’re not asking for retail price on these things but man you guys don’t care here. You’re just trying to make a quick buck off of everything that comes through your door. I told a few people I knew how much I sold this ps2 for here and they thought I was stupid. If you find a reasonable price for something then buy here , but if you sell here you will be lowballed I promise.

Alex Dotdotsor Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: When I ask to be shown some of the games behind the glass , the worker got an attitude with me even tho it’s literally his job to sell games . He also had a horrible odor that almost made me puke once I got out the store .

Christian C. Posted on Google 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Amazing service! Took a Game Gear to get recapped and have the screen replaced, and also had a 2nd GG just recapped. They did amazing work on both! The folks there are very friendly and know their stuff. Thanks :-)

Chancelor Wolford Posted on Google 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Sold me pokemon shield plus expansion for 140 brand new when they go for 200. I ordered online and they express shipped it so got it fast. They packaged it real well. Put the game in a plastic case in a box then in a bag to protect game. Very satisfied with my purchase

CaptainVideo100 Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Great selection of retro games, no doubt about that part. But this place is a pure rip off with prices! It's pretty crazy they are pricing old Nintendo games at $100+ when you can find them on eBay for less than $50.

Adam Modlin Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Good selection, but quite expensive. Between the prices and the vibe of the store, it almost feels like a front organization! Like, I don't see how they can stay in business otherwise with their prices. If you want to visit an indie game store, there are plenty of better ones in NYC.

jordan colon Posted on Google 1 year ago

Positive experience: The selection is incredible, games from almost every system including imports, but the prices are very outrageous, even by the standards of the modern retro market. Most games I looked at were about $60 and up, with many games hovering around the hundreds. I understand that operating a retro game store can be a financial challenge, especially in the current market, but I wish they had more for sale within a reasonable asking price

Azriel The Crazed Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: BUYER BEWARE: Prices in this store are purely random and way too high. Used opened games selling for like 5x the prices you'd find on eBay. I had gone to gamestop earlier this day and saw they had a dozen Ness Amiibos for $19.99 each then walked here and saw the same Ness Amiibos for 39.99. This Wolf Amiibo is going for an average asking price of $20 online. I have no idea who in this store decides the pricing, but this should be considered a borderline scam. You can find everything here online for much cheaper and in better condition, don't buy anything here.

SlushyArcher0 Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: When I got there the place looked awesome with their wide variety of new and old games. I would have loved to buy games from them if they priced them correctly. I wouldn't prefer to buy games double or triple there real price so I won't ever be coming back because of how disappointing their prices are

Alex Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: I went to this store yesterday to pick up some games to add to my collection. One of the games I picked up was a Crack in Time, being sold for 30 dollars pre-owned with no manual and a reprinted cover art with a very different box than usual PS3 game boxes. While the game was much more expensive than market value, when I returned home today to test my games, all of them worked except for a Crack in Time. During the initial game data installation with the Qwark interview/recap, it glitched out and played a ear piercing noise and froze my PS3. My disc drive isn't the problem as I have played countless games and even dumped many for emulation, this game was a massive defect and just paperweight. Very unhappy with my purchase.

J & L Game

Hi, we're sorry to hear that you are having some issues with your purchase. If possible, please bring the game back to us with your receipt and we can exchange it for you. If you are not able to return to the store, please e-mail us or use the "Contact Us" page located at the bottom of our website and we can work things out.

Positive experience: Really liked this place. The staff are friendly and the selection is fantastic. If you're into retro gaming at all, I'd definitely pop in and have a little look. They also do repairs and offer other services. If they don't have what you're looking for, they seem able and willing to point you in the right direction.

Iced Coffee Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: This place is awful the game selection is great but the prices are outrageous and the staff are incredibly rude. I payed 250 dollars to get my ds repaired and they told me it would take 2 months which I found suspicious only too Get a call back that they didn't have the proper parts and gave it back too me in a zip lock bag with my ds in pieces, I highly recommend reporting this store as its a genuine scam and the staff are the worst part of the experience

J & L Game

Hello, I believe you have the wrong store. Our repair fee for Nintendo DS systems is $59.99. Even if we could not repair your system, it would be returned, fully assembled by our experienced technicians, and you would be refunded.

Richard Urena Posted on Google 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: Awesome place if you’re looking for very well taken care of games and accessories from older game consoles all the way to newer ones.

Lee Hembry Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Has lots of good items but priced way too high. I know they have bills to pay for being where they are but everything I looked at was 3-4 times the price of other places around. Turboexpress and AES stuff was the most overpriced items. Left empty handed. Update: 2 years later went in again and the exact same games I looked at before are still there. Turbografx games priced at $500 yet on eBay $50-100

Jonathan B Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Very rude, and seems like they don't want to be there. If you don't want to work there, work somewhere else. Not conversational at all and make u feel like you are bothering them. Prices are terrible. Go on ebay instead. I won't be back ever.

c Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Absolutely god awful pricing, way worse than eBay. $1000 for a greatest hits game? $900 for a PRE-OWNED Revelations: Persona??? I just came from a store that had it for $400 in the same if not better condition. Genuine scam.

Allando Li Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Outrageously overprices everything, physical games that regularly go on digital sale cost 2-3x their MSRP price. In-box amiibos that cost up to $100, even USED amiibos costing up to $90. This store is out to gouge the ignorant consumer, recommend you to go to Nintendo store or ANY other game store for more fairly priced goods.

Xavier Martinez Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: I’m not going to waste your time with this review and tell you about the aggressive prices because I’m sure you can see all the other reviews. FYI it’s true though but besides that there is also their customer service. I have visited so far a total of two times and the same employee helped me twice on both visits. He took out games I wanted to see and was helpful but I just felt like he didn’t really feel like helping which I guess you can’t complain about necessarily. He just didn’t seem very friendly. By the looks of all the other employees they didn’t seem all that much friendlier either. They all looked very depressed and just stuffed their faces with food the entire time on both visits. I did end up buying a white GameCube memory card which I couldn’t help but feel like was still a bit overpriced but it wasn’t anything that crazy like the prices for most of their games. After that I called them over the phone about a month or so later to see if they would install a new GameCube clock battery for me. Whoever answered the phone said they could do it while repairing the GameCube. I said thank you and they hung up. I then realized what he said only after hanging up. I was confused by what he meant when repairing it so I called back for clarification. I asked if they can just install the battery or if what he meant was that they can only do it with a repair. He then bluntly stated that they can only install the battery if the GameCube needed a repair to begin with. Once I understood I went to say thank you and have a nice day when I was abruptly met with a click of a hang up. I understand it was probably my fault for not understanding the first time but I was very polite and both phone calls were less than a minute. Point is the store has egregious prices and kinda rude/impolite customer service. If you are in the neighborhood and wanna check it out maybe it’s worth it for one of the few games/accessories that aren’t overpriced. Be warned their aren’t many. If you are an avid collector especially of retro titles and are looking to expand your collection I’d stay clear of this place. Even PS Vita games are priced way higher than they should be. Older titles will always be priced higher in today’s market value but this place definitely doubles the price of what they actually go for. 2 out 5 stars

Nathan Meier Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: This store has a huge collection of games but it’s really too bad because they overprice the heck out of their games. They double and even triple the original market value of games. I’m surprised this business is still open because why would anyone purchase games at these prices? They sold new amiibo for 30-80 dollars! Go to the Nintendo store or GameStop and they will new amiibo for 15. Used amiibo were just as expensive as the new amiibo with wedding bowser priced at 80$ ?? It’s 9 dollars loose. Don’t come to this game store. I don’t recommend at all. There are better game stores in New York that are priced more fairly to make profit.

Negative experience: Has a large collection, but everything is over priced. Specifically looking at psp devices, they sell for on average $300-$400 when they can be found for about $80-$150 on eBay. They were also asking $150 for a 32gb storage card (ludicrous)

Scott Dendy Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: They use paypal only. Derrrrrrrrr! Paypal wont take my visa. ....the worst thing you can do as a for profit business is have paypal as your primary merchant account. Very un-Professional!

Kristofer Catalano Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Like others have said, there's overpriced and then there's J&L. Insane markups on everything. When Brooklyn Game Shack and Videogamesnewyork are close enough nearby, why anyone would buy anything here is beyond me. Virtually everything they're selling can be found at at minimum 1/2 the price elsewhere. Some things are marked up 250% to 300%. The only reason I'm not giving them one star is because their selection is pretty good.

Negative experience: The staff are very rude. I went in to buy a simple controller I could connect to my phone and they started treating me like I’m stupid. There prices are also outrageously high. They were charging $160 for paper Mario, a $70 game. Would not recommend

Positive experience: I always stop in this store every time I walk by. It has pretty much every game and accessory for every type of console you can think of. These guys care about the products that comes through the door, they wrap individual game nicely with a protective sleeve (even box the sealed games), and specify whether it will have the manual or not. A nice touch, you don’t see that in a lot of other game shops. Price will range depending on the rarity of the item or game but truly, I believe they would rather have something for people to look and talk about, rather than make a quick sale. It’s tough to walk out empty handed, if you know what you’re looking at. The staff are very patient, knowledgeable, and friendly. Great store!!

Sweetramo and Redolaf Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Felt sick looking at the prices for normal DS Games, like, for real, WHY? There were also some PSVitas that start at $300 USD and goes above on prices.

Vio Nayool Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Very Overpriced. I'm more surprised how they marked up the price so high than angry. Here are examples: Gameboy Color $50~60 --> $150 Paper Mario 64 $100~120 --> $200 Link's Awakening $20~30 --> $70 Prices may differ slightly but you get my point. Also, note that all of those above are USED.

Negative experience: They are selling controllers at double the market value that do NOT work. I bought a wiimote and nunchuck that do not turn on whatsoever. Avoid purchasing from this store at all costs!! And if you do, pay with card so you can chargeback your purchase, if you also receive a controller from them that does not work.

J & L Game

Hi Miles,

We're sorry that you are having issues with our used controllers. To go through some common troubleshooting, please ensure that your batteries have sufficient charge and you have pressed the Sync button on both the controller and the console. The Nunchuk controller does not use batteries and should work while connected to any Wii remote.

If you are still having issues, you can bring the controllers back to the store with your receipt, and we can exchange them for you. If we do not have suitable controllers for exchange, we will refund you. If you cannot return to the store, please send us an email and we will send you a return label.

Fantastic experience: Amazing collection of games at affordable prices. Staff is chill and immensely knowledgeable about the gaming industry. If there's a game you can't find or need fixed, chances are they'll be able to help you.

Damian Del Rio Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Cool shop, nice rare items, everything is over priced though. If you are a collector or a game hunter you’ll realize there is no reason to go here. Whatever you need can be found way cheaper some where else with a little effort. I mean come on $150 for a Gameboy color? I get those for $60-$80 all day long and that’s not even hunting for a deal.

Space Dandy Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: This store rips off people heavily and you need to know better. Uncharted golden abyss even brand new on eBay is only $64. Meanwhile this place is selling it for $299. This doesn’t make sense and you should not be paying for their markup or whatever other fees they’re adding onto it. The same thing with crystal girls 2 the same version is being sold brand new on eBay for $144. You’re being robbed. Go to book off on 45th or eBay please. Everything in the store is either being sold at retail for what it went for when it came out or an insane Mark up.

Ryan Brouchoud Posted on Google 1 year ago

Negative experience: Boy I have a lot to say about this store. What a joke of a retro game store. Everything is 3-5x the value online and most games are faded. I came to the store 2 years ago and the same overpriced games are still on the shelf, just sunfaded now. They don’t negotiate and are even charging above retail rates on newer games still being sold in stores. The store floor is riddled with boxes and makes it difficult to get around, definitely not accessible if you are in a wheelchair. The counters were dirty and so was the behind the counter area. I’m not sure how the staff can even stay in that area, it’s disgusting! I visit many game stores around the country and this is by far the worst one I have ever been to. Believe the other reviews! Don’t come here!

Gerardo “Densuo” Santana Posted on Google 1 year ago

Fantastic experience: I have gone to J&L since when they were in Chinatown. They have always treated me well, and are courteous. I don't really have anything fancy to say here, these folks are fine people and are worth your business. Highly recommended.

Vrilly Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: Everything is super overpriced, and nearly everything they have for sale is sun bleached. Buyer beware; You can certainly find whatever you're looking for much cheaper online, or, at the other mom and pop game shop in Manhattan; Video Games New York.

Steef Posted on Google 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Very friendly staff told me about what games he played on the N64 and what he can recommend! Ended up buying 3 games from them. Cool place with some nice gems

So Maryn Posted on Google 2 years ago

Positive experience: You go in and it looks like an endless store full of any video games you could think of. Poor Pikachu statue outside the store got a little beat up and they brought it inside. Prices arent cheap but for the DS games we looked at seemed fair to me when comparing online. You will get charged a premium here bc location of the store, they probably have to pay significantly to keep this store open at such a prime location. The staff seem friendly and let us test the game to check if working prior to purchase.

Jamie McCrimmon Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: As many other people have said, the prices here are completely absurd. There are games and systems being sold here at x2-x5 their actual market value. You're much better off checking out ebay or one of the many other retro stores in New York for your retro fix. Regarding their repair services; don't bother. I was quoted 1-2 weeks for a console repair only for them to hold onto it for almost a month (telling me "the repairman isn't in right now" every time I called to check on it) before finally calling me just to say it couldn't be repaired. When I pressed them for details on the issues they encountered and what they tried to do to fix it, the employees danced around my questions and refused to provide me with proper answers. I took the system to another repair shop and they got it back to me in full working order in around 3 weeks, no issues. TLDR; This place is a waste of your time preying on uninformed people. Collectors beware.

Young Money Posted on Google 2 years ago

Positive experience: Only actual vintage game store around so I have to give it a couple extra stars, but if you're gonna be selling your games here, don't. They do the same store credit thing Gamestop does

Angel Nieves Posted on Google 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Been coming to this place for a couple years and it’s still my favorite place to come to. Huge selection of modern and an even bigger collection of retro games. They have consoles and every accessory for them also. But my favorite thing about them is that when you sell them stuff they don’t tray to lowball you with the money like GameStop. Check it out if you haven’t you won’t be disappointed

Gus Johnson Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: I’m new to buying retro games. Shame on me for not doing my research. Bought a gameboy for $250 and various overpriced games. Now I realize I’ve been completely scammed. The gameboy ultimately works, but every game loads with the distorted “Nintendo” like 4/5 tries and the game doesn’t go further. It takes a few attempts to get a “clean”start to the game. Way overpriced. You would expect perfect working condition for this price and it’s sloppy.

Nicholas Cortalano Posted on Google 2 years ago

Positive experience: If you want the game, they will more than likely have it, but you're gonna pay up for it. Standard sized specialty store in Manhattan but its packed to the brim with inventory. They have a ton of games and systems, including some really obscure and valuable games (Haunting Grounds, Rule of Rose, Kuon, etc). You can tell the owner prioritizes keeping up with inventory and demand. I will say the prices are higher than other retro stores. However, I've never left there without finding exactly what I was looking for and in great condition. Especially when it comes to GameCube games. Which are harder to find these days.

Kalel Aguirre Posted on Google 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: These guys are NINTENDO IN THE FLESH, 100% Authentic from ground up, best customer service also advice you'll ever get concerning NINTENDO. I'm 42 from Washington heights take my advice if you want Retro mint Authentic games

Fanta Krush Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: Nice store with huge collection of video games and consoles. On the other side they have ridiculous prices, $15-20 for games you can get for under $5 literally anywhere else. Absolute hilarious prices , like borderline ridiculously inaccurate . If you’re in Nyc and like video games, find another store if your actually looking to purchase alot of games, you might wanna find another store if you dont like getting ripped off on prices . But after all, very well put together clean store has almost every single console /video game you can think of, but the prices are just out of this world.

Kevin Walsh Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: Only holidays to new york from Ireland. Was so looking forward to picking up some games.. boy was I wrong ill stick to my local cex back home or adverts online ... the prices are absolutely shocking.... shocking. Games that are back home for like 10 euro are like 60 dollars! Madness.

Diego G. Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: As many other reviews state— this is one of the largest retro game stores in terms of sheer amount of video games/consoles, especially in the rare and retro departments. However for the prices— it’s a total rip off. Practically everything here can be found online for much cheaper, at a separate game store, etc. It’s definitely worth taking a look around, but as another review said, “just don’t buy anything”.

Lionel Olivo Posted on Google 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Jeff was awesome! My friend wanted to trade in several games. These games were for systems that are dead, like the game gear. Jeff was professional and provided reasonable trade in value for all the goodies my friend brought with her. Good job J and L games! I’ll be certainly coming back and conducting more business with them.

Juniper Grove Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: WOW! Worth visiting for no other reason than the prices are so absolutely laughable. I've never seen such unbelievable markup to that extent, left the store with whiplash. There's a dozen other great used game and retro stores in Manhattan I can name off the top of my head with actually sensible prices. Enjoy your visit, just don't buy anything.

Guillermo Murua Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: nice staff but the prices are absolutely insane. It's nice to go in a look at the place as a museum of retro gaming but $400 for a gameboy micro? $250 for a DS.... criminal prices. sorry. Go on eBay or visit Book-off instead.

John Hitchcock Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: Place has a good selection of games and consoles and rare stuff but is overpriced. The place is ok but also they put stickers on the disk! It’s not worth a visit unless you can’t find what you want anywhere else

James S. Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: nice staff, large selection, even obscure items. only downside is this store gives ZERO discounts in terms of used games and are priced at the highest end of ebay pricing. in addition, their online prices are not applicable in stores. can only recommend this store if you’re looking for a specific older title and want it same day.

David Cantu Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: READ ALL THE LOW REVIEWS! Visited this place on my first time in NYC with a friend, the prices aren't just high, they're "lets mark the hell out of these games UP for tourists!" high, its actually insane how these actual scammers are still in business. We went to VideoGamesNewYork afterwards and it was beyond night and day, the prices there actually surprised me at how decent they were and I actually left with a few things.

Phoenix Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: Their selection is great but their prices are criminal. Example: Pokemon emerald. Normal resale can vary from $30-100. Being sold for $300 in this store. Fun store to look around at and go "OH REMEMBER THAT GAME", not to buy literally anything.

Anthony B Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: I was so excited to see a retro game store when I was visiting the city. Biggest let down of the year. What in the HELL are these prices? Are they stupid or crazy? Do they just have some dude in the back just shouting out random numbers to stick onto their inventory? Nothing makes sense here. Selling the most basic amiibos with a 200% markup is such a joke. They had animal crossing amiibo packs that you can find at target for $6 FOR $30 EACH. Who's buying any of this? How is this business staying afloat? What is wrong with them? I need answers, I feel like I walked into an alternate universe.

Максим Сальков Posted on Google 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Excellent store with a large selection of consoles and games. Here you can find rare accessories for consoles here you can find something you can't find anywhere else This store stocks the following brands: Nintendo, Sega, SonyPlaystation, Xbox, Atari, NeoGeo... As well as publishing consoles, games, accessories from Europe and Japan

alex lundqvist Posted on Google 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Wow, if retro or current video games are your thing this is the place. They have everything from 1980’s to current. To much to write just look at the pics. Correction. Ataris first system was released 1977. So almost half a decade of video games in this store. 46 years to be exact.

None of your business Posted on Google 2 years ago

Positive experience: It was a nice place. The owner is very nice but the prices on the amiibos were expensive.

Xero Hutcherson Posted on Google 2 years ago

Negative experience: Bought a gameboy here for 200$ not even 4 days ago for a gift, come to find out the screen is burned, the screen is misaligned to the console, and the light given off is barely see-able. On top of that the speaker is broken and the L& R buttons don’t work properly, mind you i paid ABOVE market price?? All because it had a see through shell and no other modifications. Do not shop here mom & pop game stores are way better

Brenna Caffrey Posted on Google 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: The people who work here helped me get a screw I'd severely stripped out of the DS Lite I'm modding. Absolute life savers. Huge selection of games for new and vintage consoles, majorly (maybe only) Nintendo. They also have replacement parts for handhelds (like styluses and battery packs), and lots of other stuff. The staff are chill and capable. I love this place. <3
