8 Bit and Up Video Games CLOSED: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Classic nyc hole in the wall video game galore in the best way possible! Lots to sift through and find treasures. Left with a few great finds and reasonable prices.
Fantastic experience: Recently I went to this store and picked up two games. In the process of buying only one game I was interested in another title as well. Marcus was very nice and he even offered me a better deal if I was to take both games which I did by the way. You have to keep in mind that rent in NYC is expensive and their prices reflect it. Nonetheless the prices are better than other stores I have visited. This is a retro store and you have to keep that in mind when you go there. They have a good selection of games and you can even find some gems if you are a casual gamer/collector. I will sure comeback to find more games in the near future. If you are in NYC for the weekend this is a spot you should visit !
Fantastic experience: I love my local game store! Marcus is an awesome guy and has a lot of knowledge of the stuff he sells. I recently picked up a few games and a Wii U pro controller at very decent price! Marcus is doing a great job in keeping this place clean and organized. Love the arcades inside store and all the retro consoles in display. This place brings back good memories. I would rate this place higher if I could! Highly recommended place for people who love retro gaming!
Positive experience: I’ve never been to this store but I was looking for game stores in ny and came across this. To the owner: if you could manage the customer service that your employees provide you would not have to respond to every review in the past 5 years. Just a tip from one buisness owner to another. Also maybe focus on the appeal and atmosphere of your store opposed to responding to reviews. Have a good one hope to visit one day! It seems like your too
How could you write a review if you never visited the store?
I have been running businesses since before you were born but thanks for the advice.
Fantastic experience: Great selection of games as well as friendly staff. I would recommend this place.
Negative experience: I went there with the intention of buying a used system. The guy in the store was there with the intention of not wanting to make money.
Fantastic experience: good finds , super knowledgeable and helpful staff. Marcus fixed it up my ps2 in no time. his passion for old games and consoles is infectious!
Fantastic experience: Classic video games and a shop that knows about modding and maintaining old consoles from recapping to modding
Fantastic experience: Brought our youth group here on a whim and had an incredible time. Marcus was amazing, showed the kids some great games and was super patient and explained everything. A real education in the evolution of gaming. Bring your kids, bring yourself for some serious nostalgia and good vibes.
Fantastic experience: The absolute man. I requested a save battery replacement my gen 1 Pokemon yellow. Managed to pull off a miracle with it, not just replace the battery, and didn't kill me on price like every other person I talked to in the city.
Fantastic experience: Super helpful and very knowledgeable about his selection. He's willing to help you figure out how to fix your console, even if he's not totally sure about the process initially Awesome experience and highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Went here yesterday evening w some friends. Guy with dreads was pretty cool and it was clear he knew his stuff well and was authentic about things. Did not feel pressured to buy and it was an interesting place to visit. From what I read of the negative reviews, people should not take others opinions so seriously (it's an opinion. If you don't want to hear one don't have a conversation with another human being). Also it's pretty weird walking into an independent retro game shop expecting things to be perfectly lit like an Ikea and polished. That's literally the opposite reason myself and some friends walked in. So I'm attributing that to the hipsters that don't understand what it was like to go into an independent game store back in the days. It's a virtual museum and it's pretty cool to see this vs other stores where everything is chained up behind glass doors. It was great to literally *experience* the games and see that things work also on authentic hardware.
Fantastic experience: My husband came in to get 3 of his SNES games cleaned here yesterday. Marcus greeted him right away and got to work cleaning the games thoroughly, all while sharing his own valuable knowledge on vintage consoles and games. Marcus kept it .
Fantastic experience: I’ve gone here a lot of times before and each time I’ve gone it’s been amazing! I do recommend.
Fantastic experience: Super nice staff, very knowledgeable, amazing store 10/10.
Fantastic experience: 8 Bit and Up Games is an absolutely amazing retro game store! When you walk in, it's an experience like no other. There are decades of video game history, consoles humming, arcade machines running, and boxes of retro systems and games just waiting. I highly recommend it and will keep coming back!
Positive experience: Great place to find vintage games and Consouls ! “Bones” is very helpful. I’ll go back asap.
Fantastic experience: I've come here a number of times and have never had a bad experience. Prices are the best in the city. Selection is great for everything but N64 and sega saturn/dreamcast (I think I remember one of the employees telling me that a sega disk binder got stolen). Games are not in perfect condition, but majority are at least good. If you are looking for pristine quality, maybe look elsewhere. If you're a normal person who just wants to play or casually collect games, this is easily one of your best options in NYC.
Fantastic experience: Very nice people working In the shop (which completely contrasts what the negative reviews say as his attitude was very pleasant) helped me with everything i needed and found two items I had been looking for ages to find. The items were sold at a very very reasonable price and do check out if you're interested in video games.
Positive experience: I've been coming at this location quite a few times in the past and even during the owners first store. I noticed a lot of people have bashed the store because they say it's either dirty or there's the staff with attitudes and so and so. Yes I do admit there are times that the staff could be a little bit more understanding and yes there are times I did notice some rude behavior as I've encountered that personally but people here are taking it way over the edge. As far as the cleanliness of the store is concerned I noticed only by the door some of the stuff there could be a little Dusty but what do you expect for vintage items the owner cannot go around cleaning every little spot and every little corner. In general the store is pretty decent. The owner does try his best to explain and answer questions when he can but he's also very busy. When I do enter the store there's always something he's doing he doesn't just sit there when he's present. He works hard. And no I'm not being paid to write this review because of him or anything to that nature I'm just like any one of you guys. A gamer on the hunt. Now as a gamer the store itself is pretty awesome sight to behold due to the fact that there's lots of vintage items scattered throughout. They are treasure trove of things that can be found and yes some can be a bit pricey but what do you expect with New York's rent. Everyone has to make a living after all go on eBay and you'll find many of the prices can even be higher at times than what he charges. If you guys will check out GameStop or video games New York aren't that much different. Now I can only give four stars because there are a few personal experiences that I encountered with one of the workers where he did not want to work even one time just completely ignored the customers as I would stand by the counter to pay for something and we would be waiting for almost 20 minutes with no one there but me. So please everyone try to be a little bit more understanding as this man is trying to make a living like everyone else. The owner may not be the most perfect man at times nor does he have the most perfect staff but he does his job keeping the store alive and going and I respect that.
Thanks for the honest review. One correction: The employee you are referring to is not the owner.
Fantastic experience: Love this place! Took my Atari 2600 in and they cleaned it up and gave me a cable FOR FREE. Will be back here for sure!
Negative experience: Terrible, dirty and dust everywhere The guy behind the counter has an attitude. Everything looks like been there for ages Nothing really interesting, did i said overpriced yet? now you know If you trying to sell he offers only store credit
Fantastic experience: Nice selection of TurboGrafx, Atari, Colecovision, Game Gear games. A lot of things are dusty, on the floor and not for sale, but you have to guess that with the owner/clerk. He's a kind and helpful guy, though. - Update: went again in September 2, 2022. Super friendly associates! Threw a discount and were helpful. Definitely worth paying a visit.
Fantastic experience: I came in a few months ago for a dreamcast controller and VMU, and the owner is a wonderful and knowledgeable person with a real love for video games. He was super helpful with my questions and we had a LONG chat about retro consoles. This store is a great one, trust me on this!
Negative experience: Very very junky inside, and not a huge selection. I felt grimy after going in here. Edit: lowering my score to 1 star after the owner decided to trash talk me
The store is swept and cleaned every day but it does have a vintage look. Most people like it. It sounds like you would be more comfortable in corporate stores like Game Stop and Best Buy.
I was being sincere. We understand that people like white retailers stores and prefer to shop in big stores like Toys R Us (back in the day), WalMart, Target and FAO Schwartz. No knock on your manhood. Just an honest understanding of where you like to shop.
Edit: Read my post above. I didn't trash talk you. Grow up.
Fantastic experience: I can only speak for myself and provide 100 percent positive feedback for this place. One instance the gentleman behind the counter (Marcus) even called out to me in the street when he found a part he thought he didn't have (RF for an old 1970s era Odyssey) that I came there looking for. As a 40 plus year collector, I highly recommend this business and am appreciative of the kindness toward me by those who work there.
Negative experience: cool store and amazing collection its just too bad the owner has some major attitude issues as well as trying to come off as a know it all in order to try and scam every dollar out of you. its a shame because if it weren't for his terrible attitude i would have considered purchasing a game cube even if he was trying to sell it to me way overpriced. not to mention he tried selling it to me without any cables!! i recommend you go visit a different store
Negative experience: BEWARE of the recent, overly positive and too-good-to-be-true-sounding reviews because that is only what they are – fake, paid-for "reviews." This place is drowning and doing whatever they can to cut corners just to stay afloat. They don't care about you as a customer and look out for only themselves—not those who innocently choose to give them their hard-earned money!
Interesting that no specific complaint is registered. People willing give us money in return for equal value. We do not coerce them into doing so. What "corners" have we cut? We can barely pay our rent and most of us work for free so I am not sure how we "look out for ourselves." Please provide specifics.
Trolls gotta troll. Which competitor do you work for?
Fantastic experience: I think it was last night when i pulled up 7/24 but they are the illest best gaming retro spot with mortal kombat, marvel vs capcom arcade machines to name drop a few. They have so much in this mice lil shop i can only describe my last visit with great enthusiasm. Magic was the word i forgot to use that perfectly describes my experience
Fantastic experience: Having collected video games nearly my entire life, 8 Bit is honestly one of the better genuine, old-school retro video game stores. Their prices are reasonable in this current market and their trade-in values are fair. Compared to their competitors, 8-bits prices are better, they have quite a selection of popular and rare games, and the manager and owner are willing to negotiate deals. This has been my go to store in the past few years and I highly recommend them!
Negative experience: The staff here are just rude. I would rather take my business down the road to one of the other game stores where they actually like to even engage with the customer.
Fantastic experience: I found this store by chance, while looking for N64. I wish i had known of this store before. This place has something that most of the new stores have lost; character, even those who work there are real gamers who will actually talk to you about the games, and fair prices. I cant wait to buy all the snes games I am missing.
Positive experience: went over there one day going around the village looking for retro video games and i doing this store. The guy behind the counter (i think his name was joe?) was really nice to everyone there and was just a good guy in general. there was a guy in the back named marcus i think and he had dreads working on a ps2. he was eavesdropping on me and joe when we were talking about a broken gamecube controller i was contemplating buying. he got out of his seat and started yelling at me and joe about how he’s not selling a gamecube controller for 30$ and that the real price was 80$. then it seemed like he was having a tantrum about me being there. joe went to go talk to him to de-escalate things and he just got louder. after this happened and he went to sit down the whole store was just awkward and the people were being quiet i ended up buying a few items and just left. real awkward. i still liked and i’m gonna come back but it was just a little weird
Fantastic experience: Amazing collection and selection and awesome service!
Fantastic experience: Awesome place! We found there many of the retro video games that we were looking for! I will definitely come again and buy more when I can! Thank you very much for your advice and friendly service.
Negative experience: Bought something new (unused) here and decided it wasn't going to work for my purposes. So I went back several days later with the still unopened/sealed item to try returning it. The associate Marcus quickly became hostile and accused me of stealing (pirating) video games because he is a know-it-all and knew exactly what I was up to (he was nothing but wrong and I was shocked that he immediately even jumped to THAT conclusion without reason). He became unreasonable to talk to and I realized he is a deranged individual; treated me like I'd committed a serious offense and disregarded the original issue at hand. I tried my best deescalating the situation because in no way should it have ever become that intense of one. Meanwhile, the owner is there the whole time listening in, shaking his head while looking like he was busy. He muttered to my friend that he "deals with this all the time" and it's a "laissez-faire situation." He allowed this egregious behavior to continue so I realized there's no way I could talk sensibly with them. Appalling, embarrassing, and shameful on their end. Rude, inconsiderate, and the worst customer experience I've ever had (seriously). If you're still reading this, I highly suggest giving your money to the "good guys" in this niche business at Videogamesnewyork (3rd Ave and 6th Street, a 7 minute walk from 8bit). I usually don't write reviews or even leave them (not really my thing) but my recent experience warranted this review. Good grief, this experience was ridiculous.
Fantastic experience: This place is heaven. The old one on st mark's was great too
Thanks for being a customer for so many years. We left St. Marks almost 10 years ago.
Negative experience: We were more than 1h waiting for the shop to open after calling 2/3 times to the “staff” phone to ask if they were to open or not. Last phone call the person was very rude instead of excusing the lack of professionalism.
Not true. I explained that the store manager was stuck on a train coming from NJ and was running late. COVID has hit us hard and we had to reduce staff and hours. Posting a one star review because we were unable to open on time shows your immaturity and lack of compassion.
Fantastic experience: Great shop to have, especially if you need something for an old system. Come in with the mindset that it's a business that sells vintage games, systems, and accessories. Buying in person has plenty of advantages. Brick and mortar stores won't necessarily be cheaper than online, but compared to other in person shops this place is quite reasonable.
Fantastic experience: Its a vintage shop. You have to dig a little but they have some pretty cool stuff. Found super old school game boy games for my nephew. He was thrilled!
Negative experience: Walked in and dude with dreads gave us major attitude and made us feel unwanted. I Saw him struggling to do something so maybe that attributed to his mood but the over all feeling was that we weren’t welcome and bothering him. Store looked pretty cool though and had some gems.Sadly We decided to not give them our business and wont be back considering we didn’t feel like we were wanted there. Maybe he thought we were wasting his time but how would he know if he makes people want to reconsider buying anything just by his attitude.
Negative experience: I first bought what I though was a Commodore 64 but it was a printer. I returned it and they gave me the real computer. I brought it home and it didn’t work. The guy told me that he tested it and I took his word(never do that). When I took it apart I found that it had been modded. Instead of a metal shield there was cardboard. It was never original in the first place. Then when I closed it up it stopped accepting power(I didn’t even move anything around).
Negative experience: Said we are bad energy all I asked was do all the wiis work Grow up bro
Positive experience: I like the Atmosphere here. For NYC there are some prices on rare and retro games. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and I love the arcade machines they have set up.
Fantastic experience: Place is standoffish at first but after multiple visits, I can say it's a great store. Always end up buy a game or 2 I'm missing from my collection
Fantastic experience: Gamer vibes 100% , alot of retro games a great customer service .
Negative experience: Staff is rude. Store is dark and unorganized. A few good finds but overall not a great selection and prices were too high.
Negative experience: The salesclerks running this store need to work on their customer service skills. Word of advice... if you lose one client you might potentially lose several more in the process. You guys need to brush off your ego and do the right thing.
Negative experience: This place is a freaking hole in a wall ran by a bunch of degenerates! Pass this trash up and check out Popngames and J & L video games instead.
Trolling for the competition, Colossus Of Nothing? Very childish.
Negative experience: Seem great online, but only online. Its dark, grim and the dread guy there was just passive. Walked in on him cursing biden out and complaining about the vaccine. I honestly don't care, but that store looks like no one cares anymore. Plus no such thing as a 5$ game there. Tons of retro stuff there. Just need to put some love back into the store and himself.
Chris There are many, many games priced at $5 and less. We sell loose disks at significant discounts. Of course, its not reasonable to expect to get top titles for $5.
The store has always been a bit dark because the electrical service is horrible. That's why we don't have AC.
If you want well lit, flashy fixtures, beautiful displays and the like you can find them at GameStop., If you want retro stuff that you can actually see, touch and in some cases, try out come to 8 Bit.
Negative experience: I must admit the selection was pretty descent and pricing accordingly.. but Dude running the store was straight rude, and very dismissive. Ask could I film some of the cool stuff for a non monitized platform just promoting cool gaming stores on my trip to the city and he instantly demands I pay him. Imagine that… goofy… paying them to advertise and bring business to his store. Once again I do not monetize.. so it was very off putting. I mean I hate to judge a person by a possible bad day but… C’mon my guy!!! I still think it’s worth checking out maybe you can catch him on a good day and better attitude.
Dave, how would you react if 5-6 amateur YouTubers came up to you and asked the same question every day? How would you feel if they didn't even say thank you or pick up even a $5 game? Do you understand how many people out there are thirsty for content? Do you understand that 98% have about 12 followers on Instagram and bring absolutely no business to the store? C'mon my guy!!
Negative experience: Spoke on the phone about getting a console maintained (not broken, but needs some upkeep work). I live out of state and will be visiting new york. They said they wouldn't work on things from people who don't live in NYC due to potential warranty issues, which is understandable, but were very abrupt and abbrasive about it. Less than 30 seconds into the call the person on the phone went to "I'm not touching it". When I asked for elaboration, they repeated that statement and "You're out of town, I'm not touching it". When I pressed for further elaboration, they finally explained, which in all fairness was a valid reason, but it was odd they were so hesitant to clarify? Then after stating that I was looking in NYC because I didn't know anyone local who could do the job, they proceeded to tell me to "just do it myself" and how their 15 year old neice could do it, I'm just as capable. I understand that some things might be easier than they seem, but sometimes I want to pay for a professional who knows what they're doing so I have the security of knowing that even if it ends up failing, it was done by someone who knows what they're doing so 9/10 times its just the system and not the repair job. Edit: As stated in the review, the reason for declining was sound, but it wasn't given until further pressed, and initially was presented very abrasively. If they honestly feel they have the right to refuse, why be so difficult in just saying "We don't work with customers from outside NYC"? Honestly I do see it as a valid reason it just makes no sense how hard it was to get them to say that. As the person on the phone said, they did not want to deal with a possible mess of fixing an out of town console worth $400+, that's fine. But on the flipside that means that if they recognize the value of what I'm looking to get repaired, they should recognize that I want a professional with experience to maintain it, not me with a youtube video and afternoons worth of experience, so doing it myself is not a valid alternative.
I'm not sure why this warrants a 2 star review Sijal. Like all other repair services, we reserve the right to refuse any repair for any reason or no reason at all without explanation. And I am not sure why you were perturbed when our repair person gave you a sound alternative. You were not looking for a complex repair, just some preventative maintenance. You stated you could not find anyone to do this maintenance so I am not sure suggesting that you give it a try yourself was upsetting to you.
Negative experience: Honest Review: If you are trying to feel welcome at this store you won’t, but if you are like me, it won’t matter to you since you are there only for the games. However, it is really sad that the environment it’s not what you would imagine (smell, customer service). Secondly, coming from a collector’s pov, this prices are THROUGH THE ROOF. I don’t know from what data base they are basing their prices but websites like pricecharting.com or even sold items on ebay will give you a better idea of where the market stands for each game. One example? Mario Party 4 GC case & manual only *no disk* FOR 50$?? The complete game *CIB* is going for 65-75$ on ebay. No hate just honest review! Overall, good products but prices are just higher than usual.
Keep in mind that most eBay sellers do not have to pay NYC rents Daniel. If you study prices on ebay and pricecharting you will see that when you look at actual data spreads that items do sell well above the averages you are looking at. There is no one price for things. The market determines prices on a continuous basis and there is significant variation in prices. BTW, we can not keep loose copies of Mario Party in the store for more than a day or two at $50. This indicates that the market is willing to pay above the average prices you are looking at.
Positive experience: Walking around NYC and went here for the teen, kind of a retro dark hole off the beaten path. Guy who works there seems to enjoy playing video games, and they will even sell you an empty video game box for a price. If you know what you want, he knows right away if it's there. Otherwise good luck.
Fantastic experience: Super cool place with every game you could imagine
Negative experience: Horrible service. Don't waste your money here. Never met someone so rude in my life. This is the first time I've ever left a Google review and I'm doing so because of how much I believe this place should go out of business
Fantastic experience: Shout out to Marcus who was able to provide excellent customer service and was extremely helpful with helping us find the products we were looking for. Great store for retro items including game cases, boxes, game manuals and classic goodies.
Fantastic experience: really friendly staff :) super helpful and informative especially for novice gamers
Fantastic experience: Just bought a Super Nintendo console here and a couple of games that are in perfect working condition. This place is authentic and most certainly the real deal. Marcus was super helpful, and receptive to anything you need help with. On a separate occasion, I met Joe and he’s that one of a kind New Yorker that you rarely see in the city anymore: honest, kind, and tough. If anyone has an issue with this gem, I would ask them to look up the nearest Walmart and not let the door hit em’ on their way out.
Negative experience: Disgusting place. Very dirty. smells of body oder, The cashier wasn’t even wearing a mask, He was in the back doing his own thing instead of providing customer service. The games that we got were in very bad condition . You’d expect to get clean discs when you’re buying something from a game store but no. They were dirty and one of our game cases just fell apart. DO NOT SHOP HERE. DISGUSTING. the place has no air ventilation. It’s awful.
We are one of the few game stores that leave the disks in the boxes on display so customers can inspect them and the boxes before purchasing.
BTW, it is never a good idea to come into a small store and then sit on the floor with your friends. If your feelings were hurt when we pointed out your bad behavior, try to be more mature next time.
Negative experience: Worst console store in New York the person on the phone is EXTREMELY rude and disrespectful. DON'T NOT SHOP AT THIS STORE.
Fantastic experience: Been wanting to check this place out for a while. Joe was so chill. The prices here are so fair. They got a nice selection of retro games and loved the MvC cab as well as the SF Alpha on the SFii cab. They also got a nice fight board w Samari Shodown on it. Picked up a DS game and will definitely be back- could hang out here all day.
Fantastic experience: Often went here in high school when it was a P&T and I'm happy that it's still around. Great staff who always make sure you're taken care of
Fantastic experience: Owner was really cool, he hooked me up with great deals even threw me a few extra games on the house. Definitely a spot worth checking out to find hidden gems & other treasures.
Fantastic experience: This place has always been a diamond in the rough.beauiful people with great service and knowledge.please, everyone should shop here if your looking for new or retro.
Negative experience: Dimly lit with a hint of smelly body odor to go with a touch of retro dust sprinkled all around the shelves
You may want to try GameStop, Walmart or BestBuy. If you want a real vintage game store, give us a try. We can't afford fancy lighting but we do have great gaming stuff.
Negative experience: Staff is useless, rude, and uninterested in making a sale. The place is super messy and unorganized and every time I've come here the "staff" was in the back playing video games completely uninterested in their customers. Much better options available within close proximity to this place.
Fantastic experience: Easily! One of the best video game stores in Manhattan, and NyC in general! It has a major catalog of video games (even the NES, and SEGA classics!) I fell in love with it for its Mortal Kombat and Marvel vs Capcom 2 arcades accompanied by top tier service. 10/10 would recommend to all my gamers.
Fantastic experience: Marcus is one hell of a technician. He fixed my Xbox within minutes, he truly is a wizard. I would 100% recommend this shop to anyone who needs help with anything related to video game consoles/games, etc. I will definitely be back. A truly authentic NY institution.
Thanks Matt. Marcus is truly one of a kind.
Positive experience: There seems to be manufacturers who fool small honest store owners into selling products that are fraudulent. However, I'm sure that there are many gamers who do not mind purchasing knock-off items.
Fantastic experience: This is THE place to go if you love video games. They have vintage cartridges and systems as well as newer releases. They've also always got one or two arcade cabinets up and running if you just want to burn a few quarters and indulge in some arcade nostalgia. Love this shop!
Fantastic experience: I was desperate to get my PS3 fixed quickly for a long-distance birthday celebration with a group of friends from college. I called ahead of time (around 6:50) and Marcus was kind enough to offer multiple solutions to make sure that we could play Black Ops that very night! I biked to the store and Marcus swiftly replaced the laser in my original PS3 and it works like a CHARM! Not only did they stay open later than normal, \they were extremely hospitable the whole time and gave me a great deal. I'll be back and would highly recommend!
Fantastic experience: Don’t listen to any of the negative reviews, I’ve been going to 8-Bit since they were located in St. Marks and have a please take experience every time. Marcus is super knowledgeable about anything to do with video games (especially retro ones) and will always recommend something stellar. The only reason they have negative reviews is because the prices are steep on some games.. like the hard to find ones.. and people have an attitude problem.
Thank you Roman.
Fantastic experience: They were really helpful and showed me the games I was looking for at really good prices. Just showing them some love since it's not packed due to the covid-19 pandemic I can take my time browsing through all the games. Shout out to Marcus for all his help.
Fantastic experience: Definitely a hidden gem....5 star establishment
Fantastic experience: He for fixed my Xbox 360 .After I was told it couldn’t be fixed . Dude was wicked kool. Plus they fix ps4 stuck in safe mode
Fantastic experience: I will definitely recommend to come here! I came all the way from NJ just to buy the PS2. On top of that he gave me $50 worth of free games !! Thank you so much
Thanks for making the trip!
Fantastic experience: Best customer service! They had what I was looking for, Nintendo ds lite. And a great place to browse all your nostalgic needs!
Fantastic experience: Very good selection and the employees sure know what they're doing!
Positive experience: They rock I've been going there for years .
Fantastic experience: 8 Bit And Up Video Games just made my holiday wish come true! This is the place to find all your nostalgic favorites, deep cuts and timeless classics. The owner just sold me his personal Wii with the games downloaded on it, he did it out of the kindness of his heart and it truly made my holiday. 8Bit has a true passion and respect for gaming and customer service. I couldn’t be more happy with my experience. This is my second purchase from 8Bit and I must recommend it to everyone that is checking out this review. Thanks again to the 8 Bit! You rock!
Negative experience: Felt more like walking into a reluctant garage sale out of someone's basement then a store.
Negative experience: poor customer service over the phone i asked them for some small information and they hung up on me
Fantastic experience: If you love old games and consoles this is for you 100%. Come in and play some arcade favs. The selection's of classic games and systems are extensive. It will bring you back to the good old days. It will also remind you of how far video games have came over the years. I give this spot and staff a soild 10 of 10
Fantastic experience: Visit, while It still exists. One of the best Manhattan retro game stores. You'll find tons of valuable and rare old games. Bit pricey on some non rare games, but definitely a place to go if you love old games.
Negative experience: Experience was alright, Upon walking in it's very dark and crowded some games are dirty from my perspective and the prices are a little too high. I've went and bought a used 3rd party controller considering the official were ridiculous in price, $70 for a new ps2 controller? Yeah no thanks....Went home and its barely responsive having to press the buttons hard resulting in my thumbs legit hurting. The staff was nice as opposed to what people say. I can see this store having potential with the verity of games but you people have, but make sure you sell WORKING products and maybe organize a little...
Its almost impossible to test every item we purchase. Sorry your controller didn't work. Make sure you bring it back so we can exchange it for you.
Fantastic experience: They are dusty and messy but the workers are very helpful if you have a question. Also it's fun to browse around, you never know what you'll find, it's almost like treasure hunting in a basement!
Fantastic experience: Went there today and felt comfortable the place is literally filled with old school video games and arcades so I feel if your looking for something you might find it here . And love the Lara Croft statue in the front
Fantastic experience: I LOVE this place. Feeds the nostalgia factor I have for gaming
Fantastic experience: Great selection of retro games, consoles, and more. Staff was incredibly knowledgeable and helped me get set up with exactly what I wanted. The whole experience was extremely gratifying to choose what I wanted. If I'm in the market for retro games again, this is the first place i'm going.
Negative experience: One of the guys gave me negative vibe when I went to that store asking him about the xbox 360 and it's Compatible, Like for example the guy body language was showing like I was wasting his time in the store.
Negative experience: If you collect videogames you are gonna cry when you enter Bad service, dirt on everything. Not recommeded.
The dusty shelves you photographed are near the front door which we leave open during warm weather. Its hard to fight NYC dust. If you want dust-free, go to Game Stop or Best Buy. If you want an interesting store with many hard-to-find vintage video games, come see us.
Fantastic experience: Great customer service, wide random selection and great atmosphere to the place. Definitely a place you can get lost in.
Fantastic experience: It was fun because they have lots of video games from my childhood Customer service was very helpful infinding the video game I need it
Fantastic experience: Been going to this place for more than a couple years now. They always have the best retro rare collections in inventory. Make sure to ask Marcus what’s new and he will show you the new buys. Prices are so good because the inventory changes so constantly. You gotta check in every couple weeks. I usually am there every week and i always find something for my retro collection. This is a destination for retro game collectors.
Fantastic experience: 8 Bit and Up is a New York City gem. A nostalgia filled store that has games from all generations at really affordable prices. Get ready to treasure hunt!
Negative experience: It was terrible. The customer service was non-existent and the employees were drinking beers. I asked one simple question and was given an attitude. Dont go here, especially if you're looking for Gamecube games. Their library was tiny. If I could rate ut a zero I would.
Negative experience: Call to ask a question saying im looking for a handheld system,i forgot the name, so i was thinking for a quick second what the exact model was and this guy comes to say “im not a mind reader tell me what you want” after only about literally 3 seconds of me thinking. Then he hangs up. Ill take my business elsewhere not a problem. Very unprofessional phone service
Positive experience: Great customer service when I went and great selection of systems and games. The only thing that I have a complaint about is that the times I have gone on a Sunday during their store hours, no one is there and the door is locked. So they might want to update the hours for Sunday if they are no longer open on Sundays.
Fantastic experience: The store owner was very knowledgeable and polite. Has a very good collection of games. If you like seeing retro games before buying them thats the place to go. Also sells boxes and game guides for 90's games.
