The Exchange

Negative experience: I try to avoid selling at the Exchange at all costs. But I had four records to sell and the Dormont location was nearby so I went there against my better judgement. I was there for 30 minutes and they had only evaluated two albums. The store was virtually empty and the employee was working on the albums for the entire 30 minutes. I asked for my albums back and left. Any other record store would evaluate four albums in less than five minutes. I don't blame the employee. It's the Exchange's system that is flawed. I learned my lesson and won't be back

Fantastic experience: The best chain in the Pittsburgh area for physical media, whether you are a hardcore collector or someone who wants to find a specific item or offload some old games/movies, The Exchange is definitely the place to go. The employees are always very helpful and there is a great selection to choose from.

Fantastic experience: Stopped in for PS2 games and a few movies

Negative experience: Place is a scam. Buying anything used from here is a mistake. PS5 controller bought from here stopped working in 3 months spent $65. Went in and was polite about the issue and they said if it’s not within 30 days nothing they can do. Said they test them before selling them, so they knew it was a bad controller and sold it anyways. Scam.

Fantastic experience: I was so excited to try the catfish which lived up to hype. The French fries have a great flavor that is too hard to stop eating. The four year aged rye whiskey is so smooth.

Positive experience: While the selection of stuff to buy is amazing. Everything worth something is ridiculously expensive. Only come for the obscure games no one talks about because those are cheap. Anything else is $80+. Saw a game for $40, eBay had it for $10-$20 off.

Positive experience: They rip you off hard on the trade in prices, but its much faster than waiting for an ebay buyer.

Negative experience: Be aware when going here and trading things in. Employee tried to scam me. He was willing to take a look at my magic cards I had on hand along with a number of other items I had taken in including two Gameboys (sp and color) final fantasy and Pokemon blue which were purchased previously from that same location. 170is for the lot including a stack of cards that he didn't bother reading off to me. I decided to take a look before the trade and find that I had left a mox amber in there with the price tag on it from a purchase. This man was giving me less then 10 dollars for a card labeled 56 dollars mint condition and then proceeds to tell me he only has experience buying pokemon cards. I've spent well over 500 dollars on the items taken in for trade and I get it that they need to resell but he was almost beside himself asking what I would ask for it. Without it in the sales price it brought things down to 167. Absolutely insane. I'm aware that I could get more money individually online or at other shops but what I don't like is feeling like someone is scamming me by claiming to know less then they actually do. I won't be returning to this location in the future and if I could give no stars I would.

Negative experience: Avoid The Exchange Unless You Enjoy Being Ripped Off I would strongly advise anyone thinking of selling their items to The Exchange to reconsider. They will lowball you into oblivion and then insult you further by slightly increasing their offer when you push back—like they’re doing you a favor. It’s beyond disrespectful. I traded in a lot of valuable items, expecting a fair deal, only to later find out from a much more honest store that I had been absolutely robbed. And I don’t mean by a small margin—I mean by a huge amount. That other store even told me they felt bad for me because The Exchange had so blatantly taken advantage of me. This place is not about fairness; they’re about squeezing you for the absolute lowest price they can get away with, regardless of the actual value of your items. It’s shady business, plain and simple. If you like throwing away money and being played for a fool, then go ahead and sell to them. Otherwise, take your business somewhere that actually respects its customers. You’ve been warned

Negative experience: Drove an hour to pick up a gba sp just for them to close an hour early with no indication online that they are closing early. I called ahead, got there exactly at closing time, and they refuse to just let me purchase and leave. Cool.

Negative experience: The exchange still has horrible prices the covid tax died down for instance Metroid prime on GameCube is worth 20 bucks they want 40 for it Pac-Man world is 15 bucks they want $25 for it legend of Zelda wind waker is 75 bucks they want 100 for it. I'm pretty sure their paper Mario was 120 bucks it's worth half of that now because of the remake at 60 bucks. Just don't waste your time here even VHS tapes are overpriced try iron blast games in Washington PA instead they have more complete in box stuff and better prices.

Fantastic experience: Huge inventory, friendly staff, and good prices. I always appreciate how well organized everything is, making that one niche item you’re looking for super easy to find. The selection of used and new games is great, easily my go-to game store now.

Positive experience: I brought in a few things to sell at the Dormont store. Although they could have done way better, it was actually more than I thought that they would offer. I brought some things to the South Side store last year and they came back with such a low offer that I thought they were joking. I didn't realize that the Dormont Exchange was the same company until I got to the store in Dormont. As such, I really wasn't't expecting much this time. Surprisingly, they were a bit more reasonable. I definitely recommend going to the Dormont location if you are looking to sell and do yourself a favor and just steer clear of their store on the South side.

Positive experience: Yo found a star wars collection for $20 bucks when Amazon would have made me pay $120+

Fantastic experience: I needed to find games and another controller for a SNES. The Exchange had everything I needed. Dylan was very helpful and gave me recommendations for some games that I am already enjoying. Great service and will return.

Positive experience: Staff is extremely helpful and courteous. Only reason I'm giving 4 stars is lack of selection, in terms of music CDs. One of the smaller Exchanges I've been in.

Negative experience: The staff is nice and they have cool stock, however the process to trade things in takes far too long and the trade price they’re offering is flat out insulting. Their main competitor gives a significant amount more for modern consoles and games.

Fantastic experience: Wow! The prices here are ridiculously fair. Most games are going to be in the 5-10 range unless it's a rare game. The DVD movies are mostly 5-10 as well in case your trying to break free from subscriptions and and be your own Netflix. I'm very glad this is so close to me

Every store is just as good as every store, just some stores have better collections than others and that changes all the time anyway. As far as the staff, they are the most down to earth people who have some of the best personalities and attitudes of any group of employees I've ever met. So intelligent and helpful too!! Fantastic experience: I got there 15 minutes before closing due to geography and the clerks weren't sure they would be able to take care of my stuff but they did it quickly and efficiently. They were super friendly and professional. I'll definitely be back.

Fantastic experience: Man, some of these reviews are pure salt. I was in last week to bring my kids and exchange some stuff. I was given what I thought was an extremely fair price for exchanging the items. There were three guys on staff and two of them were extremely helpful. One guy seemed a little moody but he may have been having a bad day. If you don't get that you've never worked retail. My only problem was the PS1 selection was limited. That's not exactly their fault, however, because everything in the store is based on what others sell them. As I mentioned before, they paid pretty well. I'll probably go out of my way a few times a month to stop in. It's a fun store.

Fantastic experience: Won't deny that they have a very impressive collection on most systems be it modern or retro, but I would still pricecheck other sellers online to see that you're getting the best deal. Sometimes the store beats them, sometimes they don't. Staff is also rather helpful and ready to answer any questions you may have

Negative experience: If you're returning something WITH a receipt, you'd better come with some storytelling too.. because the exchange ain't takin no shorts or losses.. I had a game that was still in the plastic, brand new, and dude tried to run down on me to turn my return into store credit.. "Oh was there something wrong..??" No. It's still factory sealed You have to be on your toes with these guys.. and it's the one in Dormont, so you could get 15$ off any price by simply going elsewhere..

Positive experience: This place is cool. They definitely had some really cool items that you didn't see all that often up for sale. My wife lives the frankinberry cereal, and they had a vintage figurine for sale. I haven't ever seen something like that anywhere else. So I had to get it.

Negative experience: Want a copy of new super mario brother's DS for $9,999,999.99? Then you've come to the right place. Just don't forget your saw, or you won't be able to saw off your arm and leg to pay.

Negative experience: Customer service sorely lacking in Dormont. No greeting or offer of assistance when entering the store. Restocking is more important than interacting with a customer. It was a decision to spend our money here where local people are employed, and not use an internet source. Sadly, the internet will be our first choice for music and DVDs now. It's a shame because it is a great store to enter, easy to navigate. Just no ambience when it comes to service.

Negative experience: Recently bought an item. Ask the lady what’s the return policy and she said as long as I have the receipt. Later to find out I had to pay restocking me and was told she should’ve told me… I’m a usual customer buying and selling. This is the worst customer service ever.

Negative experience: Horrible service. Very Unprofessional. Heard alot of trash talking about customers. Made me not want to purchase anything. Almost spent a good bit until we heard how nasty the employees were being. Oh well. We wont be shopping there anymore. This isn't the first incident I've experienced at this location.

Negative experience: They tried to rip me off, I turned in a PS4 controller that they were selling at the store for $55 I turned in Black Ops 3 which I paid $35 for 3 months ago there and two other games at $17.15, for all of that they offered me store credit of $16, and when I questioned it another person that worked there came over and said I'll take care of this ask me what I was interested in and when I told him that the two games that were a lot less than all the stuff that I turned in he readily agreed to it, they tried to rip me off and I feel they still did, very bad business.

Negative experience: Called them asked if they are buying disney vhs tapes. Got there parking was terrible and service was bad. They told me on the phone they would look at them bring them into the store. When I got there they told me we are not taking disney vhs tapes. Really bad service.

Negative experience: Traded in an xbone with all the cords and some xbone games to get a Ps4. only gave me 220 for the xbox with 15 games and they gave me a Ps4 without a power cord glad i payed full price <3 OH and One time I bought a 3DS game and i got home opened the case an it wasnt in there <3 Im glad they make you check and make sure you have everything cause they sure as hell dont <3

Fantastic experience: Been a customer for years. Always greeted when entering the store. Staff always friendly and helpful. If they don't have what you are seeking, they will search the inventory at the other stores and have it brought in for you. If you are looking for classic CD's, DVD or collectibles, try The Exchange first.

Fantastic experience: I stop by the West Liberty location at least once a week. The staff is always great and the manager is a good guy. Today (3/10/22) I saw them go above and beyond and felt like they deserved a shout out. At the counter was a woman that was having problems with her TV and they were answering her questions best they could without it being there physically. The best thing today though was a teenager/young adult that was neurodivergent, and one of the employees was helping him shop and find things he wanted within his budget. As a retail worker I understand some situations aren't really within normal expectations and can be challenging or stressful, and some customers need a little more care. I loved what I saw today.

Fantastic experience: I can't in good mind ever give the exchange anything less than 5 stars. Remember the days when GameStop was the only place to buy used games and consoles? Yeah, me too...take that stock, multiply by 10, add in cool vintage action figures and toys, and season with a heaping spoonful of musical items.

Fantastic experience: This Exchange location has some of my favorite staff of any store I visit. They're always helpful and super knowledgeable. I've witnessed customers behaving irrationally and they handled the situation and stayed positive.

Fantastic experience: The employees here are awesome!! We called to ask if they had any polka records in inventory as a birthday gift for my 81 year old mom. They searched the inventory while we were on the phone and pulled the one they had in stock. It was ready to ring up when we dropped in 20 minutes later.

Negative experience: “Still doing okay?” I get it, they probably get a ton of lookie loo’s and thieves but I was neither. I was asked at least ten times in the 5 minutes that I was there if I was “still doing okay” the first two I thought, oh okay they are a great staff…..but come on, I couldn’t even look at stuff without being interrupted….all I wanted was to enjoy shopping for some awesome stuff, mainly the old Pokémon stuff. I really wished I was left alone because I would have purchased something, instead on the tenth “still doing okay” I just left. I’ll go back but please give me some time to think!

Fantastic experience: I came in asking for a bunch of specific old games, the girl behind the counter offered to look up the inventory of other locations before I even asked. They had multiple mint copies of *most* of the the SNES, Genesis, and N64 games I was looking for. Aside from all the retro titles in great condition, where they really shine is having a stocked inventory of essential supplies for these older systems. I hate having to order things like controllers, composite adapters, etc for old systems and then wait a couple days. Seems like there's always at least a few of everything in stock.
