Luna Video Games: Reviews
Negative experience: Bought a controller they assured me was tested and cleaned. The controller has the most obvious stick drift.
Fantastic experience: Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Been going to their stores for years whenever I need to trade in or mix it up with my older games.
Fantastic experience: Great store reminiscent of the way video game stores used to be.
Fantastic experience: Excellent spot! Go to spot for video game console expertise
Negative experience: It was once 5 star but ever since I bought a ps2 which was completely covered in dust on the inside and can easily be seen from the back vent on the fans but it costed 140 dollars for the console alone and an extra 30 bucks for the official dual shock controller from them which is a crazy price 170 for a dusted up ps2 from someones grandmothers attic, the buttons on the dual shock didnt even work and 5 months later I came back cause I really needed a ps3 controller so I can play with friends at my place which I bought a ps3 from offerup for 40 bucks and was actually treated with care by the seller fyi, but the fact when I went back they charged me 45 bucks for the dual shock 3 controller, I went home and charged it and the controller didnt even charge at all and I left it there for an hour and I tried all cables and it didnt charge for that only controller at luna games so I called and they said I can replace it for a different one so I did and the exact samething again! Battery was just completely dead and couldnt charge at all and when I came back to ask if they can just replace the battery cause thats most likely the issue they denied me and said it was working before they gave it to me so I asked the guy working the counter for a refund and they denied me a refund saying that I had a 3 day warranty but no refunds are alowed cause they assume I messed with the controller on purpose to scam them when I went there looking for a controller at the time cause I really needed one. I also left an honest review on their social media pages and they blocked me on all pages. Do they seriously want only good reviews and the honest reviews not shown? Used to be my favorite place to pick stuff up until the ps2 situation and the ps3 controller situation and them blocking me on all social medias as well, I got trust issues with any retro game store from now on because of themand it's better off buying from offerup, facebook market place or mercari, better deals and a better time having actual things work sold to you. I get it's a buisness and they have to make money but how can you call yourself a buisness if you cannot help your customers? Do better next time luna games...
Fantastic experience: Awesome retro gaming store, and the staff are incredibly kind and helpful! I've gone their multiple times, both to sell my old stuff and buy retro stuff I didn't have, and they've been great on both ends. They also have surprisingly good inventory: I needed a PS2 video cable short notice, and they had plenty in stock! Prices are reasonable, and they gave me a fair amount for my old games and hardware I sold them. Definitely my favorite retro gaming store in the SD area
Negative experience: DO NOT GO HERE. STAFF ARE UNFRIENDLY AND WILL RIP YOU OFF ON TRADES Went here to do some trades a couple weeks ago. The gentleman with the beard that was working behind the counter was immediately unwelcoming and short. I traded in a good amount of games. Some not easy to come by. The gentleman gave me 60 dollars even I. Exchange for: blur, Rayman origins, dragon age origins, mortal kombat 1 on ps5, mortal kombat on genesis, lost planet 1 and 2, mgs snake eater, mario party 1, anarchy reigns and transformers fall of cybertron (which he was telling me was not a rare game but I knew it was the opposite). For all that does 60 dollars sound fair? No. But I took it anyway out of benefit of the doubt. Bad move on my part. I went to throwback gamez in Oceanside (amazing people who treat you with respect and care), and confirmed with them if I indeed got ripped off. They crunched the numbers on all of the games I listed and what I should’ve gotten. And yes, I got completely ripped off. Should not have done business with them and definitely won’t be going back. Anyone reading this review, do not go here. Look elsewhere for a more friendly staff that actually respects your time and money.
Positive experience: Edit: Some of the staff's Customer service is straight up hostile, a solid D-. They either really hate their job, or their customers, or both. I'm... Disappointed. Overheard a conversation between employee and a customer, and man, I feel bad for these employees. Customer kept pushing for reasons why their PS2 game wasn't going for more $ when the employees said it was scratched and showed it wouldn't load. Customer kept on for like 30 minutes, it was brutal to watch.
Fantastic experience: Love the retro game's and console's. Getting the PS5 slim there and maybe a Nintendo 64 there to.
Fantastic experience: Awesome help from the staff. They traded in my Xbox One after I lost my receipt. Awesome check out the staff Victor
Negative experience: Never pick up the phone at any hour. Not sure how these guys stay in business.
Fantastic experience: Good place wonderful prices fair deals
Fantastic experience: Good local business that has been around a long time. Good selection, good value for trades compared to other local options.
Fantastic experience: They were super easy and friendly and I got good price for my old console. I wanna go back to check some of the games they are selling to. A real walk down memory lane.
Positive experience: Customer Service is a solid b-, the girl helping wasn't very friendly but was knowledgeable when it came to retro games. When it comes to the pricing, I'd say it's pretty competitive and would give it a b+. They have awesome retro boxes, posters, and a ton of retro swag, but none of it is 4 sale. It's very disappointing being able to look at all this cool stuff in a store that you can't buy, lol. It's a big tease. However, the selection is what makes this place special. Selection wise, luna video games receive an A for sure. I'd still choose calico games or the swap meet over this place tbh. Easier to find hidden gems at better prices. Plus, the service at Calico is elite. Big rob at kobe swap meet has the best selection for retro in san diego period and has been doing it since the early 90's. If you're in the area, though, definitely give this place a try. Just be aware you'll pay more than Amazon or calico but they take great care of their items, and everything I've purchased here has worked perfectly. I would give luna a 3.8 out of 5 overall. A solid gaming store, great selection, and an educated staff.
Negative experience: The store has a nice selection, and the variety is great. However, the customer service was disappointing. They refused to take more than half of my collection, gave very dry responses, and I had to repeatedly ask why they wouldn’t accept certain items—making me feel unwelcome for even asking. The trade-in value was also quite low, as I received very little in exchange for my games. Meanwhile, the prices for purchasing, especially Pokémon games, were above market value. Unfortunately, I can’t recommend this place.
Negative experience: Store seemed interesting but was lied to by the woman that worked there. Called twice to check in two specific games and both times she confirmed, when I go in they told me they haven't had that game. Why lie to get me into the store? Wasted my time and gas for nothing
Fantastic experience: Amazing customer service and great prices for fixing old equipment. They even said that if they try and fix it and it doesn’t work there’s no charge.
Fantastic experience: Cool shop with just about everything from all consoles. Must check out!
Fantastic experience: I loved the service. Great store for anyone looking for discounted second hand media. Perfect store for retro games. Great store all around. I've been multiple times.
Positive experience: Great place to sell video games and consoles. The girls there are very knowledgeable and friendly.
Fantastic experience: Great selection of games and consoles.
Negative experience: EXTREMELY disappointed. Took my playstation here to be fixed and a week later i called and they said they couldnt fix it and it was impossible to fix. The next day I took it to a specialist and they had told me Luna Games hadnt even looked at the console. The seal to the playstation wasnt broken meaning they hadnt even opened it. NEVER coming back here, do NOT trust them to fix your consoles if they say they can.
Fantastic experience: Awesome store , great retro consoles good prices friendly staff I strongly recommend this store if you’re a gamer!
Fantastic experience: Very solid pricing, friendly service. Console selection was awesome. Found a few things unpriced that were sold to me for $1. Recommend anyone in the area visit.
Positive experience: Pretty good store. Found a wider range of stuff here than the Chula Vista location. Prices were ok.
Positive experience: This is a great concept and great store. There is a feeling you get of going into the big name gaming store circa early 2000s when it was all amazing. The prices are mostly fair yet some a bit high. The only reason this is 3 star instead of 4 or 5 is that we overheard one of the guy employees bragging to local security guards about how he bought a game for $3 and was able to sell it for 35. This was right after I heard him say to another customer about buying for "typically half of what we sell for" (ok, fair). But to then brag about fleecing someone like that? Incredibly scummy. I want to respect this place and I hope that's not the normal practices there, but I can't not mention it and let people know what may be going on, if you're looking to sell.
Negative experience: 1 star! Been coming here since you opened your doors. But today I came in with my wife and kids, looking to purchase a switch, I asked about trading in a very limited run n64 (north American pokemon version) and was met with " I have so many copies of that I don't know what to do with them" by the women working. I tried to explain it was not a game that I am selling but a console. She assured me she had too many of them and couldn't give a price. In the 3,000 (conservative) purchases at your store I have never felt more unwelcome and excluded for whatever reason a long time customer was no longer of any concern or value. As a small buisness owner myself here in san diego I can no longer morally give my buisness to you. I would expect nothing less from any one of my customers. But surely we both know you do not have so many copies you don't know what to do with. Simply put neither of your locations have one for sale, as I visited both locations today 4/28/24. My best advice is to do better. I know some customers suck. But when did treating them like they all do become proper buisness practice.
Fantastic experience: Amazing store with MOST games you'll be looking for, from wii to PS1 to PS5 and Xbox and GameCube, ECT. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Definitely coming back!
Fantastic experience: Great selection of games. Knowledgeable staff.
Negative experience: Worst experience I have about inquiring about a trade in price for my 3DSXL. Explains to me, won’t accept trade in without the original charger. The last generation of 3DSXL’s never came with a charger as Nintendo made you purchase it separately. After confirming that was true with a second employee, I was still told they wouldn’t accept unless it came with an all the accessories like charger. I stated, you just told that it didn’t come with the charger and confirmed it with a second employee but then proceeds to state trade in won’t be accepted as I don’t have all the original cables… make that make sense please.
Fantastic experience: Wow a lot of good classic games over here
Fantastic experience: Great staff. Hope my used pickups work
Fantastic experience: Always helpful. Always honest. Best place in town. Used them for years for all type of system repairs.
Fantastic experience: Excellent place with plenty of Old School games.
Positive experience: Pretty neat little place with some cool old school things and they pay pretty fairly for things
Fantastic experience: If you're looking for vintage games, this is the place. They have a very knowledgeable staff and have a large selection of video games.
Negative experience: They refused to repair my broken ps5 because it had a dead cacaroch ♂️ Not cool man!
Fantastic experience: Enjoyed Luna games staff was cool there knowledgeable in there gaming history good place to check out haven't been to second Luna location but this store was fun to be at wish I had a million dollars to guy all their games that's how good there's selection is
Positive experience: This is the original SD retro game store and it packs a lot of merchandise in such a small space. Between the two locations, I feel this one has a bigger selection of GBA and DS games. Plus, the prices are way more fair. Nabbed a few games at the same prices you find online. This location also has collectible items such as a sealed GBC and CIB Nintendo games. The employees are nice, usually a rotating roster. The area can get a bit sketchy at times, but it's all smooth sailing once you get inside. Excited to start playing through my haul!
Negative experience: scammers like dkoldies. they pretend you’re handheld system will not read and offer you low price to buy it.
Negative experience: Don't sell your games here unless you want to get offered pennies on the dollar (I'm talking 80-90% below fair market value). I can also echo other reviews discussing very poor customer service. They will barely look at you and treat any question you have as an annoyance.
Fantastic experience: Awesome selection of vintage stuff and they’ll buy older consoles and games! Highly recommended and the staff were super helpful and friendly
Fantastic experience: Fantastic collection of classic games and consoles.
Negative experience: Close in the middle of the day. Sign on door said be back in 10 minutes. Waited 20. No one showed up. Left.
Fantastic experience: Staff is super nice! Picked up some awesome titles for my gameboy and they are very well cleaned and run perfect!
Fantastic experience: They have good prices on used games
Fantastic experience: Staff are friendly and helpful! I brought a system from home that I needed help with and they were quick to assist.
Negative experience: The hippie girl that works there is rude . I asked a her simple question and she got a little attitude. What the hell is wrong with people some people got serious psychological mental health issues.
Fantastic experience: Nostalgia. I went in for a ps4 game.. .walked out with a PS1 console( only 50 bucks). The employee even went out of his way to help me find a good game
Positive experience: Store was very well organized, and the clerk knew the inventory well. No amazing deals, but I picked up a number of Wii and Genesis games for $5 apiece. They had some TI-99 cartridges out, but they looked super corroded and they told me truthfully they had never been tested. I appreciate the candor! Several people came in to pick up repaired consoles, and sounded like happy repeat customers.
Negative experience: Complete trash customer service straight up Lied said all my games had scratches and can’t take them.. bro they are pre owned you think there won’t be a scratch on a disc? And mind you not even the important part which is the center of the disc, I used to really believe in Luna that they were honest and for the people unlike many corporations it’s sad been going there for years since I was little I sent all my customers while working at Gamestop to Luna to give them business because I wanted them to thrive but the service I got was appalling and I will never send anyone else there again let alone shop there. View the pictures below .. are they really scratched?
Negative experience: My kid wanted to play some older games, so we looked into a 360. Called luna games. Said she had a 4gb Xbox 360 for $100. Got in there 10 minutes later, its $200. Nice bait & switch. I support local businesses, but not this one.
Fantastic experience: The best retro game store near the area. A fairly sized business, well equipped with all the game systems from the past. Some new games as well. Only place in town that has a large variety of game boy color/advance and DS games.
Fantastic experience: Large variety of gaming consul games. Has everything you need if you have older gaming consuls.
Fantastic experience: Very cool place A lot cool retro games n Toons of consoles at a great price Very friendly n knowledgeable staff
Positive experience: do you have nintendo ds lites or reg ds how much are they im looking for one under 40 dollars
Fantastic experience: A great place find used games and gaming gear. Fair prices given for the spare consoles and games you have sitting unused. Good selection of retro games and consoles.
Negative experience: The woman working here is extremely rude. Every time I've been here, the woman (glasses, bad skin, hair usually in a ponytail, in her 30's) does not acknowledge customers. She does not greet you, she gives short answers for everything and the experience is very uncomfortable. She sits at the computer the whole time, won't even look at you unless she absolutely needs to, and blasts music. Also, the selection of games is poor and the prices aren't even reasonable. This is a mom and pop shop, so I feel bad writing the review, but people should know that they won't be treated like a wanted customer. Take your business elsewhere -- you'll be glad you did.
Positive experience: Not much stock but the prices were decent. Did not see Ian
Fantastic experience: My favorite place to go for older used games. They have a great selection and excellent fair prices. Each location I went to was just more of the same great prices and cool people behind the counter. Spend your money here, they deserve it!
Fantastic experience: Are you trying to find a hard retro game system or hun obscure title this is a great place to start accessories to all video game platforms the staff he will round in pretty good great shopping experience in place to go for video games and more
Negative experience: My husband bought a Wii from this place and the next morning we found roaches in our home. Never had them before so my husband checked the Wii because he knew cockroaches like to hide in gaming consoles and sure enough a cockroach came out of the Wii. It was so disgusting and traumatic. Was able to get a full refund but this video game store should check their consoles before selling. Also, we had to buy so much bug spray and bug traps just get rid of the cockroaches that entered our home.
Fantastic experience: Thank you for the great price for the buy. Great customer service. And even got me a Sony PlayStation 2 controller. Very hard to find for a good price. I found it here and even got me to walk out with some extra goods. Very happy.
Fantastic experience: Video game nerds paradise! Old games and systems galore. Love this place
Positive experience: Awesome. Only issue is that they are a little strict with how they choose games you want to sell them to. Otherwise, they have a big great selection games and more!
Fantastic experience: The Luna Video Games store SDSU location is one of better location of the 2 Luna stores. Selection of games and consoles vastly larger than the Chula Vista location. They can look at each store inventory if you’re looking for a hard to find game. I come to this store twice a month to check and see what new inventory of games they have. Recently they’ve started carrying Limited Run games in store which is great for physical games collector’s for switch/ps4 etc. Prices on games are fair in line with eBay/Pricecharting for in demand games for N64, GameCube, PS2/PS3 etc. Also, deals to be had on common used games and loose carts. If you’re not sure if they have something in stock - give them a ring.
Positive experience: Good collections wish they had better prices for used consoles Prices almost match GameStop or walmart
Negative experience: HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Today my friend and I went in so he could try and sell several of his consoles. When we went in the lady behind the counter (Layne) was servicing a couple with two children. She didn’t greet us or say anything to us at all while we waited, which ultimately was not the problem. While she serviced the couple ahead of us she displayed fantastic customer service. Speaking friendly, thoroughly, and even gave them free game boy games with their purchase. When the couple left and it was our turn my friend approached the lady telling her that he was the one that called and spoke to her about selling his x box. Already she was giving us weird looks, and her demeanor had COMPLETELY changed from when she was serving the couple ahead of us. I could tell right away she was being rude to my friend and pretending like she didn’t even know what he was talking about. When he had clearly placed his console on the counter to sell, she acted angry and frustrated. Pretending like she didn’t even know why my friend was there and what he wanted to do. Which he clearly had stated he wanted to sell several consoles. She pretended to just not know what to do, she was very short, very rude, giving myself and my friend weird and rude looks. He ended up selling her his Xbox, and rejected other items he wanted to sell. But with the absolute least amount of professionalism or friendliness on her part. Meanwhile tending to the customer that came in behind us and being friendly with them. That irked the hell out of me. She ended up telling my friend he should just take his business elsewhere and sell to someone else. Which is weird… if you already told us a price you would be willing to buy the Xbox that clearly worked and was in decent condition. She just gave us the impression she wanted absolutely nothing to do with us and didn’t want to serve us or anything. She was short, annoyed, clearly frustrated, and played dumb. A complete 360 from how she behaved with the couple ahead of us that she chatted away with, smiled at, chit chat with, and gave free games to them. This was my first and LAST experience with Luna games. Literally the most ugly and disrespectful customer service I’ve ever received.
Fantastic experience: Best pricing on video game console repairs. We need more like Luna.
Fantastic experience: Not overpriced like some retro game stores and has a good selection of games for each console (they were out of ps1 games when I went which was odd but it happens I guess). Games also work great so far.
Fantastic experience: best video game store i’ve ever been to!
Fantastic experience: My interaction was with Lane. She is very personable and knowledgeable about the video game industry. Definitely a joy to talk to and I would 1000% recommend Luna Video Games for repair, trade or resale
Fantastic experience: Extremely helpful service, great workers, awesome selection of games.
Negative experience: Would not recommend. After a long drive, I arrived well within the hours posted on the website yet I was rushed to complete my purchase. The worker also lied to me concerning how complete one of the games I purchased was. I ended up having to buy the manual elsewhere on top of what I paid for the game. I easily spend a lot of money on games but I’m taking my business elsewhere due to the negative experience. When it’s so easy to buy games online I would expect physical game stores to focus on retaining customers rather than making a quick buck.
Fantastic experience: Love this place we buy an trade games for good price!!
Negative experience: Experience was garbage. The fact that all of the low rated reviews keep mentioning this female speaks truth. Horrible horrible customer service. She carelessly tossed multiple switch games from her seat to the counter like it was garbage. Then tried to say she didn’t want to take danganronpa v3, because she already has 3. Then she tried to claim she was selling them for low 100’s. Nope. She was selling them for 250. It’s like no wonder why you have 3. Rip off. Didn’t even know what a Nintendo famicom was. I worked at GameStop back in the day, and in no way shape or form does this place represent a gamers establishment. Trash.
Fantastic experience: Console repair, obscure games and add-ons. You can get a 32x for your Genesis, a multi-tap for your turbo graphics, Sega CD games, memory cards for your GameCube or just multiple copies of the same game in case you are 8-year-old twins scratch them up!
Fantastic experience: Traded in my not-so-new gaming goodies for a fair price. I also appreciated their honesty about some items that I did not bring into sell. Will return in the future.
Fantastic experience: Very cool selection of games friendly customer service
Fantastic experience: It's always nice to see old and new games consoles and accessories I like retro stores and again I travel I lived in many places to see a place like this
Negative experience: Buyers be aware! If you don't recieve an invoice with what you purchased you may have a difficult time trying to exchange product,or get your warrant reissued or a warranty acknowledgement. I paid with a credit card and was Only given that reciet a month later after having some issues with the system I asked to do a fair exchange and provided the reciet I was given, I then was told that wasn't the actual reciet and then had to go round and round to get respected as a paying customer. Then he tried to turn it around and make it seemed that I was wrong but in the end wanted to give me a fist bump and exchange my item but with no warranty still I'm saying it here and Now if the system has any problem I will be back to return it and I will file a court order to get a full refund as well as reporting it to my credit agency that is the rights I have as a citizen and civilian. I was given a verbal acknowledgement that I had a 90 day warranty. In store today was told I had three days to exchange games all this info I would have recieved if I was provided the reciet needed. It's a game to get people out of character and money. So be careful and shop smart.
Fantastic experience: Amazing Game shop with amazing prices and a selection match, finally a clean organized store well done LVG..
Positive experience: My nephews get their gaming things. we are making videos as well there are no people here yet look at the camera footage.
Fantastic experience: Stock is small but very friendly service and overall awesome place to go for retro games or systems
Fantastic experience: Great place to trade, buy, and sell games. Local store has great deals and they're super helpful. They have loads of old school gaming system if you miss them.
Negative experience: My little brother who's 13 had gone to ask about an av cable he bought for his Xbox 360. He was unaware that he only needed one cable and not both the av and hdmi cable. The lady there was very rude to him and was basically yelling at him as she was explaining.
Fantastic experience: Good games good service and has the old nes and super nes and the dual sets are really good bought one and works great I tell anyone to check out the store thx luna games
Fantastic experience: Just Got 2 Wii Games And 1 Wii u Game And Got My Wii U Console Repaired
Fantastic experience: Awesome store, carry all kinds of games and systems, new and old!
Positive experience: Good trade ins on video games. Buy or sell...more vintage the better but they have to be in good condition for them to buy it.
Negative experience: They refuse to take the console I went all ove toun to just be tender away never going there again
Fantastic experience: Good ol fashion games.... Where you can't find anywhere else.... Unless you wanna go on a residential crime spree
Fantastic experience: It was great! The employees were very nice and chill. Only problem is the lack of games. It's mostly just shovelware with a select few that are worth going
Fantastic experience: I didnt even know this store was there supur kool my store now.....
Fantastic experience: The shop has a lot of classic and new games. Competitively priced consoles when compared to online stores. The shop is small, but they find a way to get it all in there. If you're into retro games, you should stop in and give it a look.
Negative experience: Was sold a used Gamecube for $120, which is overpriced for a nearly 20 year system in my opinion, but it came with a 3 month warranty so I wasn't exactly worried. Until I tested it out and it was actually broken, disc insert wouldn't close and the controller's movement was wonky so I brought it back a few weeks later after I had found a fully functional one. They could not give me a refund despite the warranty, so they gave me another and sent me on my way. The controller this time was *much* worse, with two of the buttons simply not being functional at all. Paying in the hundreds for 20 year old products that the worker can supposedly fix, yet still prefers to give you another broken one, shouldn't sit well with anyone. I call them back and ask if I can do trade in value for the entire console + controller, they say no, can only come in to trade the controller. I'm down $120 with broken products. Really terrible standard to set, even Gamestop (which I visited on the same day as Luna) was able to give me a full refund of the absolutely broken copy of Melee they sold me, even with a month between the sale and return. If you're gonna go here, expect an experience similar to mine, if you'd rather be safe than sorry.
Negative experience: Bought a psp from here, it was broken. I did a little experiment to see how this place works; I tried to trade it in for credit and they said it was too scratched even though I only had it for a week. They’re fine with selling you broken stuff. They also don’t have a return policy they just give you back store credit even if you don’t want anything else in their store. Because of this you should but your Hyperkin and retron stuff at Amazon because at least you’ll get your money back if it’s defective. Also most games are at or above eBay price. I only go there because sometimes the price of a game they have hasn’t been updated and is actually a steal, like I found persona 4 golden for $15 when it’s $50 on eBay, but this is a rare occurrence. It redeems itself by at least having competent staff. I was happy to go because I heard about them on pat and Ian’s podcast so I guess I expected to much.
Positive experience: Very cool place they have tons of games and consoles even ones that I had never heard before. The staff seems very knowledgeable and they buy back certain games and consoles at good rates.
Fantastic experience: this place is great (way better then Gamestop any day)
