Heart Of The Game: Reviews
Negative experience: The place is horrible When it comes to cleaning their games or getting a refurbished system. Nice people tho.
Fantastic experience: My son wanted to check this place out and ask questions about Warhammer. HOLY CRAP, the place is HUUUUGGGE! Lots of board games, old school video games, and role playing games. AND, more importantly, the staff was both knowledgeable and helpful answering his questions. We will be back once he has some pennies saved.
Positive experience: They had what I wanted! Was in and out in less than 15 minutes!!
Positive experience: Good shop for some cards and games at very reasonable price too!
Negative experience: More like Heart of The Lowball, lol. Seriously, ridiculously low offers on high demand games. Its like they dont want your business
Fantastic experience: Great card shop. The staff was very helpful and they had the items I was looking for.
Positive experience: A game store with a bit of everything. They have retro games/consoles, magic/pokemon card games, board games, some tabletop games as well as space for card games or tabletop gaming. I enjoy seeing their offerings for video games.
Negative experience: Store is a mess! Not one person greeted me or asked if I needed help looking for anything.. the two people working were on there phones
Fantastic experience: Fantastic Store!!! Tons of games (board, cards, video, etc), great staff, & very organized play!
Fantastic experience: OMG! This store literally has it all, I went in on one of their MtG nights and it was the most ridiculous amount of fun Ive had in quite sometime! The staff are incredibly knowledgeable, very kind and fair when selling older cards or just in general, and they have just about any game you can think of! I had an absolute blast playing, I didn't win but that's not the point, once you get there you're just happy to be a part of the fun and the other patrons are super friendly and are just happy to be there amongst others that enjoy games as much as you or I do! Please, do yourself a huge favor and stop in! The sheer amount of games in cards they have can be a tad overwhelming at first but they will definitely steer you in the right direction and they will never steer you wrong! I think I found one of my new favorite places to go!
Negative experience: Sketchy vibes and horrible prices for used, worn out items. Dude charged me $45 for a Xbox 360 controller that doesn't stay connected to your console.
Positive experience: It's alright. Not too much of a selection of retro games, but of course that's based on circumstance.
Fantastic experience: Great selection of magic cards and the computer you can use to look for cards as well is extremely helpful. Love going here especially to see the dog who is almost the best part of visiting
Fantastic experience: Heart of the game is like a second home to me. It offers a lot and chill enjoyment
Fantastic experience: The best selection of cards, table top, and games in town, the weekly events and activities are fun and relatively affordable for what you get. They are also very friendly to new people trying to learn how to play thing.
Fantastic experience: They have a wide variety of cards for magic, Pokémon and others. Great staff and fun events weekly and daily! Personally i love that they have a girls night on Tuesday for magic!
Fantastic experience: I come here often for Thursday and Sunday night commander. Great group to play with, pre releases are a blast. Wide selection of magic, pokemon and video games. Would highly recommend for a local store for new and returning gamers
Fantastic experience: This place is cool they bought my cat for 80% store credit. Good vibe they buy and sell cards and video games too.
Positive experience: The store is good and has a decent amount of staple stock for higher tier play. For anyone who is a collector of a number of games you will find the employees useful in either knowledge or deck construction assistance.
Fantastic experience: Good space, atmosphere, and wide variety. Definitely recommend stopping in.
Negative experience: I wish I could give 0 or negative stars on this. First, yes… they have retro games and systems. Yes, they sell magic and other cards. Prices aren’t awful but not great. That’s about where it ends They aren’t friendly. They don’t smile. They don’t help. They don’t welcome. They stand behind the counter on their phone and don’t say a single word when you’re the ONLY person there. I have given this place chance after chance and have tried to engage the workers without them talking first, still fails. I hope this store closes so their inventory will go to someone that gives a care, even in the slightest. Please close or be shut down by your “customer base” They are LBGTQ+ friendly, which is great, but I think they need to focus on being overall good employees as well.
Fantastic experience: Great staff , friendly and knowledgeable , great selection of games , various game nights and activities
Fantastic experience: These guys were so kind. I got a CRT TV from them for a PS2. They have one left as of 09-25-25. They even let me use their equipment to get it to my truck. They have a great stock in all your hobby needs. Will be coming back for some 40k stuff and games. Thanks guys
Fantastic experience: Fantastic selection. Employees very knowledgeable and fantastic personality. The puppy was adorable.
Fantastic experience: Great store it had a lot of the older stuff I was looking for. I didn't have time to play in the event that was going on but the people that were there were helpful.
Fantastic experience: The customer service here is amazing and you should go here for all of your card and video game needs.
Positive experience: Been stopping in here the last couple months if shopping in the plaza. Half of the TCG items and cards are much greater than msrp if not double. The other half is on par or a tad over. Know you're prices before going and you'll do ok
Fantastic experience: Cool shop, having later hours on Friday and Saturday is really particularly cool. I'm from Rochester so I don't get out this way very often, and I'm a little spoiled with the card shop in my town. However my trip here was really enjoyable, I was able to look through cards physically which is a really cool thing. Good prices on cards and games. Will return.
Negative experience: Went in to sell some games a few months ago and they didn’t have enough cash in the register to buy what we had already discussed over the phone. Then brought in cards recently after being told they are buying only to show up after driving 30+ mins to them not having any cash in the register again and being told they could only offer store credit. As I was leaving a person who was hanging out talking to the staff offered me 20% or less of comps… Store has a decent amount of games for sale on the shelves but definitely air in the side of caution when looking to sell.
Fantastic experience: Great place for cards, video games, and memorabilia. They have a ton of new and retro games, and they are the only place I've seen that sell Guitar Hero and Rock Band Guitars and drum sets.
Positive experience: The people at the counter are nice, and they were able to use a disc cleaning machine to refurbish my PS2 copy of Persona 4 for about $2. It works again, which I'm quite happy about! The only downside I can think of is that depending on which retro console you're looking for, you might have less luck finding something you might want to play (e.g., it seems like the selection of N64 games is a lot smaller than, say, the Wii or PS3 selections.)
Fantastic experience: Awesome vibe and helpful staff. Even after i made a mess and dropped the dice the helpful(and unreasonably attractive) staff helped me clean up the dice and didnt make me feel as dumb as i would have otherwise.
Positive experience: Always able to get help at the counter no matter how busy. Great hangout.
Negative experience: My son wanted to sell them a Xbox, but because he is a kid they tried to low ball him. Pawn shop took it no problem
Negative experience: Arrived here on a Monday at 2:30 and they were closed. Bad for business to not be open when the sign on the door says open at 2! Thank you
Fantastic experience: Athena was an absolute delight helping me build my first commander deck; super knowledgeable and helpful throughout. And the customers were giving advice and helping me too. I chose 1 commander squirrel and she spent a good amount of time perfecting my deck to my liking!
Fantastic experience: Played in a video game tournament and got some mtg single cards here. Fantastic storefront with welcoming people all around!
Negative experience: Definitely not worth the trip, my son wanted to get some Pokémon cards and the selection was horrible. The staff seemed to be bothered that my son was looking for a couple cards. Ended up buying a couple items and one of the video games didn’t even work. We won’t be back. Staff should learn to treat customers nicely and there games should be tested before being put out for sale.
Fantastic experience: Bottomline, amazing atmosphere and extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff. Went in to see if they could hekp figure out what was wrong with a Wii console we bought knowing it could have been anything. Within minutes from what we described he was confident it was the sensor bar quickly grabbed us and knew one and even insisted on plugging the whole system in just to be sure. Of course he was right and even said if we bought it from there that the replacement piece was free. We got it off amazon but im forever going to them for everything! Also super cute family vibes in there while everyone was okaying games together in the back. MASSIVE selection of games even gamecube and especially Wii!
Fantastic experience: Great choices and staff. Vibrant as gamers are actively playing board games!!
Fantastic experience: Awesome local game store in a plaza with food and drinks easy access. Warhammer dnd star wars various board games xbox and ps games and Nintendo and Sega.
Fantastic experience: Bought video games here multiple times and have had very good selections for various old/new consoles. Nice and friendly staff.
Negative experience: While the shop had a lot of stuff. The staff seemed really bothered when I asked questions. I understood it was busy but I just did not feel welcome when I came in. I'm new to MTG so I don't have too much info on what I'm looking at and they maxe it seem like a burden when i didn't know about how to use the kiosk / when they jad to look for stuff since it wasnt in the system yet. Overall I don't plan on coming back to this shop I hope this hasn't happened to others and I really wish this hadn't happened because like I said it seemed like a cool mtg shop.
Positive experience: First time here, flew in from Florida to watch a football game. This place was by my hotel. I walked over to check it out. It is a nice place. The staff were good. Walked around and it brought back a lot of nostalgia.
Negative experience: Terrible service and they don’t have any good video selections. The store worker also gave me an attitude whenever I asked for help.
Fantastic experience: If they don't have the game no one does. Very knowledgeable and funny
Fantastic experience: Come play FIGHTING GAMES every Saturday with the Buffalo Fighting Game Community! 2p-10p. Bring your own PS5 controller and jump in the ring with Buffalo's finest. Andy and the crew that run HotG are also pretty ok, too. :D
Fantastic experience: Went into this store for the first time and was greeted by the nicest staff and impressive selection of video games and MTG singles. They offered very competitive prices and had all the game supplies I could ever ask for. I wish I lived closer so I could frequent this store.
Fantastic experience: Andy has one of the best selections of MTG in the area. The play area is huge for a game store in Buffalo. The Staff is the best.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely lovely place! One piece Digimon, Mtg, and pokemon are all supported here. Helpful and kind staff. Really nice people going here. Would recommend to any one in the area
Fantastic experience: Bought a collectors item from here and the worker was reasonable and gave me a fair price. Good atmosphere! 100% would recommend
Positive experience: Nice store. Plenty of D&D products available. Wish they had a section for other alternatives.
Negative experience: Terrible service. Employees are more interested in eating and talking to their friends then helping other customers. They have a great variety and quantity of cards but that's a moot point if no one is willing to pull them for you.
Fantastic experience: This store has a massive collection of vintage Pokémon. I’ve been waiting a long time to find a store like this. Excellent selection of holos and non holos from base set, jungle, fossil, base set 2, and rocket. The prices are very fair. Justin, one of the employees, was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. It’s definitely worth visiting!
Fantastic experience: Great store for gaming and collectibles, lots of friendly staff to help! Definitely worth stopping in to check it out for any MTG players.
Fantastic experience: Amazing place. I come here when i can, it's a great place. They have all of the cards i want and a wide selection of games. And their prices are amazing too. 10/10 would recommend.
Fantastic experience: The employee who helped me was amazing. They helped me over the phone and they had an amazing attitude, super great pricing and overall just a great experience. If I’m ever back in the US I’ll absolutely come again.
Fantastic experience: The selection of mtg card singles is very high. There is ample play space. For video games they have a few rare things pop in from time to time. They tend to sell fast so it's worth more frequent visits. Stop by if you are interested in table top gaming.
Fantastic experience: The owner is both knowledgeable and kind. The staff are all friendly and helpful, and the place is always lively. Just an all around fun time!
Negative experience: 2 people in the store other than myself and about 6 employees most of them standing around. Neither of the other 2 customers were shopping, just chatting across the store about MTG from the play area. Stood around for about 15 min because I wanted to look at some cards in the case and just got completely ignored the entire time even though an employee was sorting cards right next to me. This isnt actually the first time either, but it will definitely be the last. They also use old pre used sleeves which honestly doesn't give the best impression, won't go again when better places are fairly close and actually pay attention to customers when they need some help. Imagine being a store and clearly not wanting to sell your product, have to wonder how they stay open. In the time you would have to stand around before they decide to even give you the time of day you could be down the road at a better shop and checking out, wild.
Negative experience: Used to come here for Magic The Gathering product. While they have an excellent single collection, their service was lousy at best with multiple employees often talking to each other instead of helping customers.
Positive experience: Workers need to communicate more - everyone says something different. Store credit is a joke & needs to be worked out. Was mislead & if I would have known I wouldn’t have exchanged at all.
Fantastic experience: Heart of the Game is a great store with a fun atmosphere. They have regular events so there are always people around to chat and play games with, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and the selection is expansive.
Fantastic experience: Very well stocked! Great place to find and play vintage video games as well! Reminded me of a Blockbuster style setup up front, with a bunch of tables in the back for different activities. Every other local place turned me away and multiple recommended them! This is my new place!
Fantastic experience: Awesome shop, good people working there. Everyone was helpful and professional with just the right amount of gamer casual
Fantastic experience: Great customer service and fantastic array of products to choose from, whether it's video games to card games, and also hosting tournaments for the community. It's legit a one stop shop for the best of both worlds.
Fantastic experience: Spent a weekend in Buffalo and decided to do some retro game hunting. Will say they have a decent selection of older games when compared to other stores in the area. Great staff too.
Negative experience: called specifically to ask if they have any guitar hero games for the wii. the dude who answered the phone just said yep. we asked which ones, his response was “a bunch”. we drove 20 minutes to come to the store, they didn’t have a single guitar hero game on the floor for sale. he had to look in the back for several minutes and brought out the only game we already own. sad we had to drive 20 minutes to find out information he could have told us over the phone if he looked on the shelf.
Fantastic experience: Reasonable prices for n64 stuff, definitely going back. I guess it was some game tournament and it was poppin'!
Negative experience: Not a review I'd like to make, I really love and respect used game stores. But I was really disappointed by my experience here... I called a few hours before I arrived about selling an Xbox S console and they told me to expect about 10% more than what GameStop's Pro cash trade-in offer online would be. I left for the store, which is an extra hour drive compared to my nearest Gamestop. When I got there, I was told they may not even buy it before even looking at it, but they checked something in the back and changed their mind. After that, they opened it and began checking it, quickly finding that it was all in really good condition. They offered me a trade that was even lower than Gamestop's Pro cash offer online, I had to double check afterwards that it hadn't changed in the last few hours, which it hasn't and is still valued at a better cash offer. This contradicted what I was told on the phone and the 10% extra trade value that sold me on coming here in the first place wasn't even considered. I didn't feel I had an oppurtunity to question the offer, it seemed set in stone as they told me what the total would be if all checked out, but later claimed we agreed upon it to a co-worker as though I was allowed to negotiate. I don't think this is right, especially if misinformation is being sent over the phone when it's different in person. I agreed to the trade mainly because I drove all the way out there and didn't want to walk away empty handed, but also because I'm deeply non-confrontational and have difficulty speaking up for myself or just in general. That's the main reason why I called ahead, I wanted to know how much it would sell for before I got there so I wouldn't have to ask in person. I genuinely feel ripped off and it's a bummer to say that I should've just gone to a GameStop instead... I truly appreciate what these stores do, but this was a very unfortunate situation that shouldn't have happened and could've easily been avoided with honest communication and fair trade deals.
Fantastic experience: Really cool store with so much variety. Came in for Magic the Gathering cards and found what we needed. Good service too. Will be back to check out all the video game options as well.
Fantastic experience: Great place, fantastic staff, especially the little guy with the beard, I've heard he has the softest hands this side of the Candian border.
Fantastic experience: Very knowledgeable and friendly staff can be found here. You won't feel out of place. They're all very down to earth and can help with anything you'll need
Fantastic experience: Top-notch selection of magic cards, DND books, and Warhammer miniatures, along with video games from NES and earlier to more recent PS5 and Xbox Series titles. Well-informed and friendly staff. Recently got back into Magic after a decade. I've gone to Heart of the Game twice in the past week, both times the guys behind the counter were knowledgeable and friendly. They don't make you feel like an idiot for asking questions, they seem genuinely interested helping you get into a hobby. I would highly recommend.
Fantastic experience: Everyone is very knowledgeable and they have the best prices around hands down, if your into magic like I am this is the place to go. Its also a very family friendly place with not only the staff but the customers and other gamers there willing to show you anything you need help with. I'm a regular here at least twice a week. Honestly can't recommend enough!!
Fantastic experience: Absolutely amazing place! On site console and card battles. The best trade in value for your old consoles, games and accessories alike! The customer service is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced. I walked in looking for a charger, and they didn’t have one in stock new so they gave me a used one for free. Today they’ve gained a new customer, and a life long one at that. I went back three times within the hour. Very thankful for their expertise and honesty. Being in the store brought out my inner nerd and I’m thankful.
Negative experience: It takes them 2 weeks for there returns I would never buy from them again they only good for gaming events
Fantastic experience: Great store with great staff they are nice and knowledgeable on games and cards they sell. Good place to go and play table top games and card games! They hold tournaments for cards and table top games.
Fantastic experience: A nice man with the softest hands I’ve ever seen and a beautiful chiseled face adorned with a elegant beard and a sophisticated pair of spectacles handed me the best coat of arms I’ve ever laid my eyes upon, his short stature doesn’t stop him from giving excellent service. I will return again someday to fully complete my frog deck, I hope the short man will be there upon my return, and grace me with his presence. Exquisite store!!!1!!
Negative experience: Do not go here! Very overpriced & the staff is terrible they don’t attend to you upon waking in the store. I waited 10 minutes to be serviced as all of the workers were standing in a circle talking to each other they are very lazy. All of the staff is very rude!! They need to just close down all together!
Positive experience: Excellent selection of board games and used console games. Everything I go in to look around, I always end up buying something!
Fantastic experience: Great prices on retro video games, they’ve helped me come close to finishing the home console collection of Nintendo Sony SEGA and Xbox. Edit: My boy Furgeson deserves a raise, absolute giga chad. Makes me keep coming back even if it’s a convorsation about modding a Wii.
Negative experience: Place is nice and cool people but they did not show us the YGO collection because they are organizing. I get it but I drove few hours just for that.If you guys are organizing they keep them out the regular the place where you sell them
Fantastic experience: Awesome service I bought a GBA Dragon ball game it didn’t work I went back on they cleaned it and it played like brand new Would recommend + this store has an area of consoles and accessories
Negative experience: Ever since Ben left the store, the Warhammer 40k and war gaming community at the store has been neglected. The guy who is in charge of the wargaming supplies and events neglects us, and let's other groups do his job of organizing events, and he doesn't even advertise the events. And the variety of models and hobby supplies leaves a lot to be desired. If you're a War gamer, stay clear and check out Harlequin Hobby.
Fantastic experience: Able to buy a booster box for an extremely fair price and the staff were great and welcoming. Will be coming back again soon!
Fantastic experience: I love this store. Needs more in variety for dice and card covers, but always a place I stop at when I'm in the area
Fantastic experience: First time in the shop from out of state and what an amazing experience we had! Donovan (I think) was super helpful and great to talk to! We spent well over an hour in there just talking while he helped me build my newest deck. We will most definitely be making the 2ish hour trip back to this shop because it was just so amazing!
Fantastic experience: This place has all the retro titles I have ever wanted! They also have tons of DnD minis Doce and they have Warhammer 40k minis and they sell paint for them overall this place is the best gameshop I go to even better than Gamestop!!!
Fantastic experience: I love coming here. I always like to be serviced by the short man with beard and glasses. He is so handsome and I cant help but notice that he has the softest hands. He's so gentle with the product when handling it for me. I wonder if he sees me more than just a customer. Oh this place has a good selection of DVD's too
Fantastic experience: Heart of the Game is probably my favorite game shop. It's on the smaller side, so you may not find your niche game there, but I do find they have a good variety for my needs. What's even better than the selection is the staff. They're honestly the main reason I keep coming back. Each and every staff member is incredibly kind and helpful. The atmosphere is great, and I really feel welcomed by everyone who works there.
Negative experience: This store is very dirty and dingy. The selection isn't very good, and the games aren't very organized. Multiple copies of the same game have different prices on the case. Went in today to browse the video games, and was never asked if I needed help. Store smelled bad, and was really loud from all the Magic The Gathering players. A lot of these "retro" video game storesare now carrying collectible card games products. It's the same problem GameStop has. The focus isn't on video games, but all these other things.
Negative experience: I went in Tuesday night and a staff of 7 workers were standing around in a circle by the door while a really short guy that works there was talking about how he needs to keep his hands smooth for the ladies in the mean time I waited for some service by the card area that I never got so after a few minutes I left, while I’m in the subject of the short gentleman that works there I rarely see him but every time I do see him there, I don’t see him doing anything but I always see his mouth moving, I feel like he’s a distraction more then a worker, kinda like he’s the business’s mascot, now I run a business and personally I wouldn’t have a person who does nothing but distract other workers on my staff, because like I said, rarely see him there but when I do I don’t see anyone working and the people are trying to work he just stands next too talking their ear off.
Negative experience: I messaged them 5 HOURS in advanced about 23 cards i wanted and i told them when i would be there. I got a response from then confirming it. Then when i arrive, they did not have my cards ready and i ended up waiting over an hour for them to grab 19 of my cards because they didnt have some. They knew what i wanted and when i wanted them, they agreed, and still did not do that. There was only one other customer when i was there, yet i still had to wait over an hour for somthing that they said would be ready by the time i got there. The other customer even said to me that they had already been waiting over 30 mins for some cards. They were just as upset as i was. Never go here unless NO other place has the cards you need. This place is a LAST RESORT. Terrible staff and management. Very sad.
Fantastic experience: Decent selection of gaming supplies. Mostly 40k and D&D minis, some BattleTech, very little X-wing. LOTS of Magic/Pokémon cards.
Positive experience: They have an OK selection, I would never sell any of my retro games to them however. Give you a lesser value than GameStop and then turn around and make three or four times profit on whatever you just sold them. That’s not even the annoying part, what really upsets me is every time I go in there you have to try and find someone that works there because everybody is in the back playing with their Pokémon cards while they have paying customers waiting at the register for almost 20 minutes.
Fantastic experience: Great place, with an abundance of different games supplies from video to trading card to tabletop. The staff love to talk shop and have a deep knowledge of gaming history. There's a tremendous amount of passion here.
Fantastic experience: Tons of games for all systems, really cool store with nice employees who are knowledgeable about anything and everything video games. Also has a board game section in case you are into that sort of thing.
Fantastic experience: Really great staff experience. So I bought a PS4 from them two days later I got my PS5. Unfortunately I had to take the ps4 back. But they made it easy and hassle free experience.Ill do business with them any day.
Fantastic experience: Excellent store! This place is well kept with a wide variety and selection of retro games which have all been cleaned, cased, and well maintained. I was greeted by multiple friendly associates the moment I walked in the door. They asked me what brought me to their store and if they could assist me in any way. I walked out with several games, a new controller, and new favorite video game store. A+ for Heart Of The Game.
